Found ticks on my dog. How do I get rid of them effectively?

He needs a tick preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, or even Advantix over the counter can kill ticks quickly and prevent them for 30 days. Please get him on a tick preventative soon and visit your vet soon if you notice any symptoms of tick bite disease (i.e. anorexia, lethargy, fever or lameness). You should also avoid areas that he could be exposed to with high tick populations. Keep him out of the woods and consider getting your yard treated for. Hi there. I would recommend using a good quality flea and tick preventative medication such as Nexgard or Bravecto - both of these are extremely effective at killing ticks. If those aren't available in your area, you could also try a Seresto flea/tick collar, or a topical spot-on product like Frontline or K9 Advantix.

Tick prevention can be achieved in many different ways. There are TONS of products available on the market, some of which are prescription only and others that are over-the-counter. You might ask ten different vets and get ten different answers as to which product is best, and this is sometimes due to the fact that certain products work better in certain geographic regions. For instance, where I practice in western Pennsylvania, we find that the Seresto Collar provides the best protection, particularly against deer ticks. However, this is not what was routinely recommended further down south. The recommendations will likely be different in the UK as well, so asking some local vets their opinion would be a valuable tool for you. Just in general, there are three different formulations for protection: topical, collar, and oral medication. Any of them are capable of getting the job done, just some are better than others in particular instances. In terms of humans, ticks can definitely infect us with diseases. Both dogs should be started on this medications your veterinarian agreed. First you will need to speak with your veterinarian to make sure these medications are not contraindicated. The best way to get rid of ticks would be to use an oral tick preventive like Nexgard or Simparica. You give him a tablet and the ticks will die. If you use it every month, it will prevent the vast majority of ticks from attaching to Oli. If you cannot get one of these products, wash him in a flea and tick shampoo. Make sure to read the directions carefully as it often requires you to leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for 10 minutes or so. Each product is different and will tell you the appropriate directions. Brushing him will also help. In some parts of the world, ticks can transmit diseases. I’m unsure what products you have in the U.K., but some of my favorite products are Credelio, Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica. These are all oral products that will prevent fleas as well as kill the ones on your dog. I hope that helps!

I recommend to use an additional product for ticks if he is going to be going into tick infested areas on a routine basis. This could be an oral preventive like Simparica or Nexgard. You should also use a tick collar like Preventic collar. You could also use one of the above mentioned oral products and something like Proheart or Interceptor for ticks. I recommend to discuss the best option with your veterinarian. Use a magnifying glass and make sure not to handle the tick with your bare skin.
