Is Quercetin safe for dogs with bladder crystals and allergies?

One product that I have seen used that seems to be safe and effective is NaturVet Aller-911 Allergy Aid chews. This has 25mg of Quercetin in it, which would be a safe dose. This brand can be found online or at your local pet store such as PetCo. I would also recommend Welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules to help reduce inflammation and Turmeric root can also help reduce inflammation. There are really no scientific studies demonstrating efficacy of tumeric for conditions in dogs, but there is some information about it helping with gastritis, parasites and liver disease with mice. However, the dose used was 500mg/kg, which is a lot of tumeric. Without there being any good information about its use or the recommended dosage, I cannot recommend it for allergies. It's a very safe spice to give, so you can always give it, but I can't say that it will do anything. Additionally, tumeric will not be nearly as effective as the prescription medications. I understand that the prescription medications can have some undesired side-effects, but Apoquel is a promising new drug with less side effects; so it looks like you are already giving him the best treatment. Another option is to have a skin and blood test to try and determine what he is allergic to. After this is done, an allergy shot can be formulated; which is about the most natural and effective thing you can do for allergies. Your vet or a veterinary dermatologist should be able to help you with this.

I believe Royal Canin now makes a hypoallergenic diet that is also appropriate for crystals that has hydrolyzed proteins so the immune system does not recognize them and they do not trigger allergies. Even though the ingredient list might contain some things Dylan is allergic to, he should not develop allergy symptoms. This diet is called Multifunction Urinary and Hydrolyzed Protein. Talk to your veterinarian and see if this might be a good option for Dylan with his specific crystals. Otherwise you could discuss having a nutritionist formulate a home cooked diet, but it is very important that a veterinary nutritionist is involved so that the diet is balanced and appropriate to prevent crystal formation.

Anything all natural doesn’t have any drug interactions, so yes they can be given together. Unfortunately there is nothing natural that is proven to help with urinary incontinence in dogs. I would stick with the Propalin if it is working for Cruz and continue the natural supplement if you wish, since it won’t do any harm. I hope that Cruz does well with his medication. Hello. You do want to keep to this diet for the majority of his calories. Acceptable treats should make up less than 10% of his overall calories per day & include low fat yogurt ( 2-3 tbsp. 2-3 x weekly ), 1/4 of an apple, white rice, rye bread, 2-3 non-salted saltine crackers, 2-3 baby carrots per day, & small amounts of cooked beef, chicken & eggs. Avoid lots of meats & any high protein treats & no vitamin or mineral supplements. The daily Dasaquin is fine to use. Try to keep to the prescribed diet as much as possible. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. Cosequin and Duralactin are typically safe supplements. It is unusual though for a male dog to have recurrent urinary tract infections. He should have a sterile urine sample submitted for a urine culture after finishing his most recent round of antibiotics. This will ensure the infection has actually resolved. X-rays of his belly are useful to look for bladder stones as these can predispose a dog to infections. I hope this information helps!
