My new puppy has worms and no shots. What vet costs should I expect?

I am so sorry to hear that your new puppy Mia Grace has worms. This can be very troubling for you both. First of all rest assured that worms are very common in puppies. So much so that puppies are routinely treated several times from 2-3 weeks old. It is possible that Mia Grace never had these routine de-working treatments when she was younger and should have them now instead. Dogs make the ideal candidates for worm infestations, as they scavenge, and inspect other animals fences. Most worms that infect dogs -- including roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms -- live in the intestines, so that’s the first place for your vet to look. I would suggest taking Mia Grace in for a check-up with your vet as she is new to your family. The vet will check her overall health and will make sure she is up to date on her vaccines. De-worming tablets or injections are relatively inexpensive and table from $10, depending on weight of your dog. I hope this answer was helpful!

Costs for vaccination vary from place to place, there may be a Humane Society clinic in your area that may offer lower prices. Yes, your dog can go to the vet to get her vaccinations even if she hasn't had any yet. Call around to some clinics and ask them what their puppy visits cost, often those will include some labwork, such as a fecal analysis to check for intestinal parasites. Let them know your concerns and if you have financial restrictions, they will work with you if you let them know up front what is going on. There are very few infections that can pass between humans and dogs, but ringworm and scabies are two that can be transmitted and both cause itchy skin and hair loss.

Congrats on the new dog! She should be seen by a vet for a wellness exam, and will definitely need her distemper/parvovirus combo vaccine (Dhpp) and her rabies vaccine. I also recommend a heartworm test and fecal test to check for parasites, and get her started on both heartworm prevention and a good flea&tick prevention. There are a number of other vaccines that your vet can discuss with you, that we'll give according to what's in the region and what Sosa might get exposed to. I would recommend their first round of vaccines at 6 weeks. The vet will be able to deworm them and give you instructions on when they will need their next set of shots and deworming. Since prices vary so much depending on the area and the practice, I would call the vet you plan to use for vaccines and ask for prices on first round of puppy shots for two puppies. They should be able to give you a close estimate of cost. Since they are mixed breeds, I doubt you will be able to get a lot of money for selling them. Most people are only willing to pay for full breed dogs or a small “adoption” fee if a mixed breed. You may be able to ask for the cost of the vet visit for them. I hope this helps!

You can buy a puppy wormer over the internet or in any pet shop over the counter. Worm your puppy now and again in 2-3 weeks. Save up for vaccinations (three courses) to protect him from deadly viral diseases including rabies.
