My puppy has worms, but is active and healthy. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Usually tapeworms are gone after the first treatment as long as puppy doesn't get reinfected. I hope this is helpful! Take care now.

The worms in the photo appear to be tapeworms or, less commonly, pinworms. these can cause impactions and diarrhea, especially in kittens. Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe medication for Coco without having examined her. However, your veterinarian can quickly determine the exact type of parasites present with a fecal sample and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because many parasites are transmitted by fleas, it is important for Coco to be on a monthly flea preventative. You should also be careful when cleaning out her litter box to make sure you wash your hands well with soap and water, as some of these parasites can infect humans. I hope all is well!

The best medication for this is usually chosen based on a fecal examination to determine which parasite is affecting Ace. The same deworming medication can be given to your other dog. Drontal is licensed for puppies at her age and you can get it over-the-counter from local vets, pet shops or online. Please, remember to repeat the treatment in two weeks time.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Chica has tapeworm. Tapeworm are usually from fleas (current or previous infestation). Most general puppy dewormers do not kill tapeworm. Chica should get a dwormer that gets tapeworm, either drontal or cestex or droncit. Your boxer can not get tapeworm from those segments, she would need to have ingested a flea as well. I hope this helps and I wish Chica the very best!
