Is it normal for my puppy to whine after neuter surgery with a cone?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Roman. His incision site appears to be healing with only mild bruising and swelling associated with it. I do not see any appears that are opening in your picture. It would be unusual for him to still be painful a week after surgery. The collar may be bothering him, but if his behavior does not resolve, then I would check in with his veterinarian. If you are able to fully supervise him, you can try to take the collar off for a little bit. This will help you judge if the collar is causing the change in behavior. Usually the cone must be worn for one week or until the stitches are removed. These signs may be compatible with pain and could be quite normal after the operation. If persistent and last for more than 48 hours I would recommend a check up at your local vets.

Poor Douglas! This sounds like a difficult surgical recovery. It sounds as though Douglas had not fully recovered from anesthesia at the time of his discharge. It is possible that the reaction that you saw was an excitement reaction from some of the sedative or pain medications he was given at the time of surgery. While this is not a normal reaction, it is also not uncommon to see a brief period of excitement after certain medications. Confirm that Douglas was sent home with some anti-inflammatory pain medications and be sure to find out when his next dose of pain medication is due, as he could be whimpering as a sign of pain. Otherwise, continue to keep him in the crate until he is able to stand and walk normally, and generally restrict his activity until his sutures are removed. Make sure that he is wearing an e-collar (cone) for the next 10-14 days to prevent him from licking at the incision. I hope that the rest of his recovery is uneventful!

Since she is taking carprofen she should not be in severe pain. She is probably upset because she has to wear the cone. I am afraid you have to bear it out as she will try to "whine you into submission" ie hopes you will take the cone away. The whining should stop within two or three days. If she keeps whining for longer and you think something is wrong with her or if she gets pale mucous membranes, cannot urinate or stops eating you should take her back to the vet for a recheck,

Constantly dry heaving and trying to vomit are signs that your pup probably needs to see his doctor. Tail down and trying to reach his rear aren't complications of a neuter-they are a normal reaction to pain in the area. Please keep on his e collar (or "cone") at all times so that he cannot reach this area as it can get very swollen and painful if he is agitating it right after surgery. Hope this helps!

That is quite normal, some dogs tend to be frozen with the cons on them, especially in the beginning . When you take him out for a walk, you may remove the con, just for that 15 minutes walk, then put it on again and see if it helps.

Dogs may feel strange for up to 24 hour or so after sedation or anesthesia, just like humans - so it's not uncommon for them to be restless, whining, or otherwise acting a bit unusual the evening after a procedure like this. Most are back to normal by the following day. :)
