My 2-week-old puppy is weak and slow after deworming. Is this normal?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Maze. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian right away. This is a dramatic response to a dose of deworming medication. If she had a very large parasite load, the dewormer could make her ill as the worms die off. However, most puppies are not as sick as you have described. She could also have another disease that presented at the same time. Regardless, she needs veterinary care. I worry that her blood sugar has dropped low as she is not eating well. This can make a puppy weak and wobbly. I hoep this information helps and you get her feeling better soon.

Lelia not eating is a sign that she feels very bad and it's possible that it is related to a reaction from that dewormer although other causes are possible. The big concern is that she is very young and not eating. Puppies do not have the physical reserves of an adult dog. If she has not been eating since Monday then you need to take her in for an exam and medications to soothe her stomach. You don't want her to end up with low blood sugar and need a visit to the emergency clinic! If she will not eat her own puppy food, try warmed white meat chicken and plain white rice. This is not balanced but it will be fine for a few days. If she will not eat that, she is pretty sick. With young puppies, it's best to be cautious as they are fragile. Have her checked out today if possible.

Puppies depending on their age can sleep quite a bit and not be very playful if for example less than 2 months of age. If your pup is older and you think may be sick due to other symptoms, it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, your pup may be fine. Hi, I'm worried if Zoey is still weak and vomiting. Young pups don't have much in reserve so if they stop eating they can deteriorate very quickly. It could be related to the de worming medicine if she had a lot of worms that died quickly, or she may have an illness like parvo, giardia or coccdia. If she's not eaten today, take her to the emergency vet tonight. If she's eaten some and is still walking about, take her in the morning.

I am not sure the type of dewormer or the vaccines that you used but vomiting often, lethargy, and not eating are not typical 2-4 days after vaccination and deworming. It is very concerning that she is having these signs and she could have an infection or possibly have a parasite that was not susceptible to the dewormer that you used. She really should be seen by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an anti-vomiting injection, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, dewormer, and/or other medications to treat. You could try to find a clinic that would work out a payment plan or apply for care credit and have her seen. Hope she feels better soon!

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, Khaleesi is too young to receive vaccinations. Typically vaccines are first given when the puppy is 8 weeks old. The dewormer for roundworms (if it was pyrantel) is given orally once every 2 weeks 3-4 times. Sometimes puppies that have a roundworm infection may become lethargic. Lethargy in puppies can be caused by a variety of other medical conditions as well including viral infections. If Khaleesi is lethargic, not eating, and just not herself, my best advice is to have her seen by her veterinarian for an exam just to be sure there is nothing else more concerning going on that would cause or contribute to her lethargy. In some puppies with a significant burden of roundworms, vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a means of expelling the worms. This also can cause inappetence from nausea and mild lethargy as a result. Although rare, intussusception (essentially intestines that telescope into one another) can occur in cases of parasitism, which can cause vomiting, lethargy and inappetence. At this point, monitor Kai for changes tonight and try to tempt him to eat with boiled white meat chicken and white rice as a bland diet. If he is still lethargic and not eating by the morning, he should be examined by his vet. The greatest likelihood is simply that his body is working to expel the roundworms.
