My puppy threw up after getting his shots. Does he need them again?

Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Additionally, like humans some dogs may become ill from their vaccines. It is important to note this for the future when your dog goes to get vaccines again so that they may elect to spread out his vaccines and prevent future reactions. Given that Rocky has been feeling ill for a week now, I would recommend having him evaluated by his veterinarian today as he may need pain medications, bloodwork, and some medical supportive care to make him feel better. He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 8 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 4-6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

This sounds serious. You need to get Rocky to a vet as soon as possible for treatment. This is not something you can "fix" at home. The two main possibilities for his symptoms are: 1) vaccination reaction or 2) parvo virus however, there are any numbers of things that could be the issue. Without examining him myself it is too hard to say. Please get Rocky to a vet ASAP. A puppy his age will get severely dehydrated with all that vomiting and not eating.

It is a vaccination reaction if they are excessively vomiting. So if he vomited once or twice I just have people watch them. If you are concerned because it has been more then that I would recommend calling your veterinarian so they can treat him. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Muggim. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. That is a lot of vomiting in a puppy. The milk will not sit well on his stomach so I would stop offering that in the meantime. A vaccine reaction can cause vomiting, but it typically does not last so long. Was he given a deworming medication at the time of the vaccine? A high parasite burden can cause vomiting as they die off. Either way, he needs to be evaluated to determine the cause of his symptoms and how best to treat him. I hope this information helps!

As long as your dog has all his vaccines and they are kept up to date, he won't get deadly diseases such as parvo, distemper, or rabies from your mother's dog. There could be another reason why your dog isn't eating or drinking, and has thrown up. He could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis among other causes. Given that he has drank water and if it's stayed down, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
