They are likely safe, however it is difficult to say definitively. If the vaccines are not stored properly, they will be ineffective leaving your pet open to infection. When vaccines are shipped to a veterinary clinic from a supplier or manufacturer, they are shipped and stored under refrigeration properly until use. Furthermore, depending on sales, the vaccines in feed stores may be at or past their expiration date which may also affect efficacy. Lastly, it is always recommended to have your vet examine your pet prior to vaccination to ensure good health and proper administration of vaccines. A sick pet should never be vaccinated.

I do not trust the vaccines sold at feed stores or pet stores. We cannot ensure that they have been handled appropriately or kept at the correct temperatures to be able to work. I would recommend that you take Iroh to a vet clinic or even shot clinic to be vaccinated. At his age, two vaccines for distemper/parvo/adenovirus/parainfluenze at 1 month apart is sufficient for 1 year's protection. He is also required to be vaccinated for rabies by a vet. Hello. Your veterinarian is correct. The first vaccination was done at too young an age to promote immunity. No harm was done & this is a common practice with breeders who vaccinate so early. To promote the best immunity, vaccines are administered at 8, 12 & 16 weeks of age, then again in 1 year. Vaccines should be administered as recommended by your veterinarian after the one year boosters. So yes, Maple should receive one more booster vaccination. If you give one vaccine every two weeks until they are 16-18 weeks, then that should be adequate. The L4 stands for Leptospirosis, which should only be given twice 2-4 weeks apart. If you give it more than that, then you risk a vaccine reaction. After the second vaccine, you should give just the vanguard 5 without the L4. Vaccines are typically given at 4 week intervals, not 1 week intervals. Stella should be vaccinated at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. She should have a complete physical exam prior to ensure she is healthy enough for vaccines. Core vaccines include the distemper/parvovirus combination vaccine and a rabies vaccine given after 12 weeks of age. Stella is likely not adequately protected following your vaccine protocol and should not be exposed to other dogs, especially dogs of unknown vaccine status.

The feed store only carries vaccinations that protects puppies from distemper/parvo/parainfluenza/hepatitis or more commonly known as the 4-in-1 or the 5-in-1 shot. It does not protect puppies from Rabies, Leptospirosis or Bordetella which are also recommended to fully protect your pet. Rabies is required by law in most states except Hawaii (which is Rabies free). Worms are not treated with vaccinations but instead from a dewormer. Typically Pyrantel Palmoate is the general dewormer used to rid roundworms and hoookworms but it does not cover the other potential worm infestations which include coccidian, tapeworms, whipworms and another parasite called Giardia. Which is why it is important to have fecal examinations done on every puppy to ensure everything is covered. If cost is a concern I would recommend trying to find low cost spay or neuter clinics or vaccine events at your local pet store so that you are getting reputable vaccines that are administered appropriately and complete care for your puppy.

She also needs a rabies shot and that has to be given by a licensed veterinarian or licensed technician. Vaccines given by your vet are tracked, handled and stored properly, and the manufacturer will stand behind the product if there is an adverse reaction or event. The problem with just buying the vaccine from a feed store or catalog raises the questions of shipping, storage conditions, quality of the product, and lack of back up from the manufacturer if something did happen.
