Why is my 5-week-old puppy underweight, not eating, and losing fur?

A pot-bellied appearance with the rest of the body being thin can often be seen with a heavy parasite load (such as worms). It sounds like this puppy is not in good condition, and while he may be healthy once treated, you should be aware that it could require some money on your part to get him diagnosed and treated.

I recommend getting him in to see your vet as soon as possible about the loss of appetite and diarrhea. Puppies that young can dehydrate easily and their blood sugar can drop quickly to life-threatening levels. The diarrhea could be caused by parasites, a bacterial or viral infection, or possibly swallowing something he shouldn't have, irritating the GI tract or, more seriously, getting stuck and causing an obstruction. The skin I'm less worried about, though that can be addressed at the same visit. Many puppies develop what is called puppy pyoderma, which is roughly equivalent to acne in humans. Most outgrow it and it rarely gets bad enough to require medication, but sometimes antibiotics and therapeutic bathing is needed to help them heal more quickly.

There may be something besides the skin thing going on if this is the case. I would highly recommend having Hustler tested for lice, especially if you are seeing white things on he haircoat. Lice in pets is usually not contagious to people and can cause intense itching and irritation. Lice can be treated with prescription medication from your vet. The vet may also want to run some bloodwork if Hustler is also not eating, since this can't be explained by possible lice but instead an internal illness (i.e. Viral, bacterial infection or upset stomach) may be present. If this pup is really two weeks old, and won't suck from the bottle or suck from mom, she may be very ill and needs to see a veterinarian right away. She may have some kind of infectious disease which requires testing and treatment for her to get better. She looks dehydrated in this picture, and that happens very quickly when puppies stop nursing. Annie is experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe she is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe she is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get her checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with Annie.
