Puppy tick bite bleeding: How to protect my dog from ticks and fleas?

When a tick bites it injects an anticoagulant which hinders clotting of the blood. This serves to avoid that the ticks mouth instruments stick together and it facilitates sucking the blood. Depending on the amount of time the tick was on depends on what disease may have been transmitted. With flea and tick products though some repel and others kill in contact. Being as though you found the tick dead, the vectra seems to have worked. I would not panic necessarily at this time however monitor the bite(s) and make sure they are healing well. During an annual vet visit, to be safe, you can always ask to have something called a 3DX done or a 4DX done. These test are blood test that test for tick Bourne diseases as well as heartworms

Lesions like this could be for many things including fleas, trauma or bacterial infection. You must protect the area from licking and Allura should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. The best way to get rid of ticks would be to use an oral tick preventive like Nexgard or Simparica. You give him a tablet and the ticks will die. If you use it every month, it will prevent the vast majority of ticks from attaching to Oli. If you cannot get one of these products, wash him in a flea and tick shampoo. Make sure to read the directions carefully as it often requires you to leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for 10 minutes or so.
