My puppy has a swollen nipple lump. Could a bug bite be the cause?

Based on these photos, it does appear there is a little dot at the center of the lump, and you could be correct that this is some sort of insect bite. I would watch this lump over the next week or two. As long as it is slowly getting smaller, then I would not be concerned, however, if there is no change over the next couple of weeks, or it is getting bigger, firm, red, or painful, then seek veterinary attention. Thank you for proving a picture of Hugo! It looks like one of his nipples is swollen. This could be due to trauma. He could have injured that area, and he now has a hematoma. It could also be an infection, which could be caused if he received a bite from another animal. It could be a reaction to an insect bite, such as an allergic reaction. Finally, it could be a fungal infection. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain so I do recommend it getting checked out by a vet. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dolly. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian when possible. Her nipple may just be a bit larger than the others. However, dogs can develop mammary masses. Her veterinarian will feel the nipple and surrounding gland to see if this may be the case. If so, surgery is typically recommended. Hopefully this is not necessary though. Her hindlimbs can be evaluated at the same appointment. If she is struggling to get around and jump, it needs to be determined if her legs are sore or if the pain is actually in her back. Regardless, this is likely a separate issue from the nipple. The veterinarian will try to determine where she hurts and may recommend x-rays of the affected area. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

If a mammary gland swells up within an hour the cause is usually either trauma, or an insect bite or even a snake bite. If the swelling has been there for a longer time or developed over a longer time, then this could be a cyst or an abscess or a mammary tumor. Observe it, and if it does not get smaller over the next 48 hours, take Baby to your veterinarian for an exam.

I would continue to monitor is for any sudden changes. It should definitely get checked out by a vet in the next few days. Possible causes for this include mammary tumors, tumors not related to the mammary system, infection, or mammary hyperplasia. If it gets suddenly bigger or there is any discharge, I would see a vet sooner.

The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. That snout does look swollen. It is best to take her to your vet ASAP as you are doing as swelling of the face, neck, or head can quickly get serious. Your vet can give her a shot to help reduce the swelling quickly while they help find the cause of it. Bee stings and other insect bites can definitely cause swelling that quickly, especially if Candy ate a bee or wasp!
