My dog has a swollen nipple lump and is limping. What's wrong?

My dog nipples have swollen up and there looks like a tiny lump on one I don’t no if I’ve just googled stuff and scared my self also her back leg is sore she is walking out struggling jumping up it keeps coming and going hope you can help Thankyou

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dolly. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian when possible. Her nipple may just be a bit larger than the others. However, dogs can develop mammary masses. Her veterinarian will feel the nipple and surrounding gland to see if this may be the case. If so, surgery is typically recommended. Hopefully this is not necessary though.

Her hindlimbs can be evaluated at the same appointment. If she is struggling to get around and jump, it needs to be determined if her legs are sore or if the pain is actually in her back. Regardless, this is likely a separate issue from the nipple. The veterinarian will try to determine where she hurts and may recommend x-rays of the affected area. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

I agree, the bump in the picture looks like a nipple, which is a normal part of a dog's anatomy. Chewy's limping won't be related to that, and limping is a sign of pain in dogs. Your vet can assess the leg during the physical exam and may recommend x-rays to help determine the cause of Tammh’s limp. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Tammh without consulting with your vet.

If he has swollen lymph nodes then he could have an infection or possibly lymphoma. Your vet can run blood-work and aspirate the lymph node to determine why it is enlarged. If he has an infection than he would need an antibiotic to treat. If he has a problem with a disc in his back then he would also need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications.

Hi. This is a very big mass. If it is firm and painful, this is concerning in an unspayed, older pet is cancer unfortunately. Besides a cancer, other possibilities include infection, cyst, lipoma, a benign mammary tumor, hernia, etc. She should be fully checked out and have the mass sampled to get an answer. The sooner the better in this case.

Considering the mass just appeared and she's also lame, I would suspect that it's a fluid swelling due to an injury. It would be best to have her seen by a vet sometime in the next day or two in order to diagnose the specific condition and provide the necessary treatment. You can apply a warm compress to it to help with pain and swelling. She will need to go to a vet to have it checked as it may be an infection or a growth. If she is nervous or anxious then i would call and see what arrangements can be made to minimize her stress. Such as medication for anxiety prior to travel or not waiting in the lobby with other dogs and people but maybe and exam room or the car until they are ready for you.

Why is my dog's swollen stomach lump making her unable to walk?

I am very sorry to hear about your dog. What you are describing sounds like most likely a tumor. There are many different types of tumors. Two of the more common we see in this area are lipomas, which are fatty tumors and feel soft/squishy, and sarcomas which are firmer feeling. Unfortunately it sounds like this is large and causing her problems. She needs a visit to the vet's office to examine the tumor and see if it can be surgically removed. They may want to take an x-ray and may want to do what is called a "fine needle aspirate" to collect cells to try to identify the type of tumor before surgery.
