My puppy is stressed, itching, and threw up after shaving. What to do?

Vomiting and inappetence can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. She may be having side effects to the medications administered. Hair loss and scratching are likely due to allergies. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Shelby evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check her hydration status and give her medications to make her feel better. Good luck!

Lilly Lynne may have a bit of rash or razor burn if she was trimmed close. First be sure she is on appropriate flea control as she may have picked up fleas from groomer. Benedryl is acceptable to use once or twice daily if it give her relief. She may also be having a reaction to the shampoo or fragrance the groom used. I would give her a bath in dawn to wash off any residue to see if that helps. (Original blue dish soap dawn). If no improvement then she may need a vet visit. I hope she’s back to normal quickly. However, if this continues, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. In the meantime, you may feed her a bland diet composed of boiled chicken breast and white rice which help with an upset stomach. Good luck and have a great day!

I would suggest giving Penny an oatmeal bath, as those are soothing to dogs with itchy and irritated skin. You can get oatmeal shampoos for dogs from a pet store. If that doesn't help, then the itching could be due to something else, such as fleas, mites, or allergies. At that point, I would take her into the vet for an exam, as the vet can determine if there is a medical issue causing the irritated skin, and can treat accordingly.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As long as they aren't irritated by the products used and they aren't cut too close resulting in razor burn they shouldn't. I HAVE seen dogs present to the Vet with skin irritation after being groomed. It doesn't happen to ALL dogs though. Good luck!

Hello, sorry to hear about your puppy. What you're reporting sounds like Snowball may be having some allergies which could definitely cause the clinical signs your are describing. Allergies can also lead to anxiety and stress due to the itchiness and discomfort. Other possible causes of her stress could be associated with you not being around such as with separation anxiety. If Snowball continues to break at her self or act very anxious, I would have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Monitor her skin for any redness, areas or hair loss, swelling or pain and notify your veterinarian if you note any. Hope this helps and best of luck

Areas of hair loss can be due to a variety of causes, including skin parasites (mites or fleas), allergies, an infection (bacterial or fungal), or another underlying medical issue. If the spots are worsening or spreading, or if they are itchy/seem uncomfortable, I would recommend Zulu be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her hair loss, have any necessary testing done (skin scrape, culture) and start on any treatment (parasiticide, anti-itch medication, antibiotic) that she may need to resolve it.
