My puppy's stomach is darkening. Is this a normal skin pigment change?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 months and 8 days old | 14 lbs

We adopted a 4 month old lab/terrier mix.After about 10 days we noticed her stomach has become quite dark. Checking online I read it could be allergies. We had been changing her over from Purina one puppy to hills puppy food. I immediately went back to the Purina that the humane society had her on. I asked my vet and he brushed it off saying puppies sometimes have this reaction from laying in sharp grass. Her stomach continues to get dark. She acts totally fine & eating well. Is this a concern

Thank you for asking the question about Harley. If she is not itchy then it may just be pigment change to her skin. Lots of breeds can have changes to their skin and
Hair coat as they mature. If you happen to have before and after pictures to post in another question that may be helpful. Is she is itchy, or the skin has wounds or crusting then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

The pictures look like it could just be normal pigment change. As puppies mature their pigmentation can as well. If the skin is raised, thicker, crusty, or itchy then I would be concerned. If you have any concerns then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. If there is a concern then a biopsy could easily be done at the time of his neuter. This looks like hyperpigmentation. It typically occurs in lightly pigmented, sparsely haired regions as dogs get older. It can also be caused my inflammation so just make sure she is not spending too much time sunbathing and that there are no other signs like licking/scratching/lesions. My Boxer's stomach skin is darker. Is this a normal pigment variation?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Daisy. She appears to have normal pigment variations on her abdomen for her breed. If one isolated area becomes very dark or she develops a raised mass, she will need to see her veterinarian. Otherwise, I cannot make out anything abnormal from your pictures. Is my dog's skin turning dark under her armpits and belly normal?

It isn't abnormal for the puppy pink skin to darkened in these area to a uniform greyish brown color. the skin should still be soft and not "elephant" like which indicates excessive licking. My dog's stomach is getting dark. Is it normal or needs treatment?

Hyperpigmentation of the skin is common with age where there is no overlying hair. It can also be caused by skin irritation/infections but if there are no lesions or symptoms it is likely normal. Is it normal for my 7-month-old dog's skin to darken and fur lighten?

This may be a normal aging change for her. As puppies lose their puppy coats the adult fur can change color and the skin pigment can darken also. If the skin looks normal with no sores I wouldn't worry about it. If she is itchy that may cause changes in the skin color. A veterinary visit is indicated if you are seeing abnormal areas on the skin.
