My puppy has a large stomach bump near his private area. What is it?

My puppy luma has a large bump on his stomach right above his private area. What is this bump? Is it serious. He doesnt seem to be in pain or anything. He eats and drinks regularly.

Luma could have an umbilical hernia. This is an opening in muscles wall located where the umbilical cord was previously attached. Typically these need to be corrected surgically and it can be done at the same time as when you get him neutered. It's never recommended to breed a dog who has had an umbilical hernia because there they are inherited. I would have Luma seen by a vet either tomorrow given this bump is large. The vet can diagnose if it is an umbilical hernia and can discuss when surgery should be done to fix it. I hope this helps!

Hello. It does appear that Ace has a small umbilical hernia. Your veterinarian can examine him in person to discuss if surgery is necessary or recommended. Yes, this looks like a small umbilical hernia. They are fairly common and are generally closed up when the animal is spayed or neutered. Usually it’s nothing to be overly concerned about, but certainly should be repaired at some point. If it gets larger then I’m more concerned and you should have it examined and get your veterinarian’s recommendation. This could be an umbilical hernia, the location would suggest that, umbilical hernias are common, it's basically a hole in the abdominal wall that requires surgical repair at some point, it is usually not urgent though.

This looks like an umbilical hernia, quite common and usually not serious in dogs. It is usually recommended to repair it when general anesthetic is performed for castration. Anyway, generally speaking, this kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination (if it is an hernia physical examination will be enough). A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Other differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors (unlikely if Ichirou is under 5 years of age). Why does my 7-week-old puppy have a lump on his belly near his groin?

This may be a hernia, which can occur in this area of the body (inguinal area). These are common in small puppies. I would recommend taking him in to your vet within the next couple of days to confirm this. Also you have the option of sharing a picture with either myself or another expert via consultation. Other possible causes for a lump is an inflammatory reaction (usually red), abscess (usually warm to the touch and may be painful, caused by trauma), or a seroma (blood filled sac due to trauma).

Puppy belly lump: When should I repair his hernia before neutering?

Milo’s a cutie! That does look like a hernia, which is a rift in the abdominal muscle wall where intestines protrude through. Some hernia’s are reducible meaning you can push the bowels back into the abdomen. Some are not, and you are correct, there is always a change that they can get bigger and more dangerous because if they are big enough for a loop of bowel to pass through and twist on itself/strangulate….that can be life threatening. It is best to have the hernia repaired (they’re not removed…rather they bowel is pushed back through and the opening in the abdominal wall is sutured closed) at the time at of the neuter to minimize the number of anesthetic events Milo undergoes. This can be done earlier than 6 months….e.g. at 5 months. You can discuss early neutering and hernia repair this with your vet or wait 2 months and have both done when he is 6 months. Good luck!

My dog has a growing, painless lump. Is it an umbilical hernia or just muscle/fat?

When internal organs slip through an umbilical hernia, the swelling tends to become larger very quickly and is very painful. That does not seem to be the case with Charlie which is good. Umbilical hernias are normally present at birth and should not develop later in life. This swelling also looks like it is a little higher than his umbilicus, so it may not be an umbilical hernia. Depending on what your vet thinks, they may perform a fine needle aspirate to collect a few cells and decide what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. If it is a benign mass, they may not recommend any treatment. If they think it may be a hernia or if they see any concerning cells, they may recommend surgery. My puppy has a stomach lump or abscess. What to do without a vet?

Unfortunately, Spot really should be seen by a veterinarian. If it is an abscess, that is one serious infection that needs to be addressed. It could also be a severe hernia. The swelling may be caused by loops of bowel that have slipped through a defect in the muscle wall. This will require surgery to repair. If left untreated, it is possible the bowel could become twisted or strangulated which would be an emergency and potentially life threatening.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It does look like umbilical hernia. As long as it is not getting bigger, there is no danger for Gracie. Umbilical hernia rarely causes any problems to dogs, unless it is very large (it does not look large in Gracie). This hernia can be surgically repaired, it is usually done at the same time as neutering (during one surgery).
