My puppy is sneezing, coughing, gagging, and spitting mucus. Call vet?

Hello. I would take this as a day by day. Pixie may have a little cold, but if she is acting & eating well, it may just need to run its course. I would definitely keep your appointment on Friday, but if she does still have a cold, your vet may put off any vaccinations for a few days longer. The coughing and sneezing, especially if accompanied by nasal discharge can be caused by an upper respiratory infection or even pneumonia. These conditions require a veterinary exam and potentially bloodwork and x-rays to diagnose and treat. I recommend having Trigo seen by a vet as soon as possible. He should be seen immediately if he is unresponsive or you believe he is having trouble breathing. I hope all is well!

Poor girl. The only thing you can do in the meantime is to try and unclog her airway. You can do so by using a humidifier or placing her in the bathroom with the hot shower running for 5-10 minutes once or twice a day. You can also use a pediatric syringe to help remove any mucous plugs. However, it sounds like her infection is quite severe, so I would look into taking her to another vet who can get her in sooner. Young puppies do have a tendency to develop pneumonia quickly after a prolonged upper respiratory infection that is left untreated, so its best to get her seen right away. Sneezing as a sole symptom is not an emergency, and his vocalizing during sleep may have been related to a dream. However, the vomiting multiple times has me more worried, and warrants a vet visit - particularly since it's coming on the heels of his respiratory changes. Hope this helps!

Hi Nadia. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Chances are Tortuga has kennel cough. The vaccine is not 100% protective (just like our flu vaccine) so even if a dog has been vaccinated they can still get kennel cough. The symptoms are usually milder and the course of the disease is shorter in dogs that have been vaccinated versus those that haven't so giving the vaccine is definitely warranted. I suggest you just monitor him for now since he seems to be acting normally. If the coughing gets worse or he starts showing other symptoms then get him to your vet for an exam: * ocular and/or nasal discharge * vomiting/gagging/retching * not eating * lethargy Of course, if you are worried you should take him to your vet for an exam now. I recommend to take your puppy in to have an exam. Although something like a cold or a virus is a very common cause of sneezing, if you notice it more after eating or drinking that can be suspicious for a cleft palate. The doctor needs to take a good look inside her mouth and make sure that her hard palate appears normal. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!
