My puppy screamed when waking up, then acted normal. What happened?

Sometimes animals do dream so that could potentially be the cause. Also he could have very easily hurt himself but not seriously, for example if he got a dew claw caught on the bedding. If he seems back to normal I would simply monitor him, and you can always take him to a vet for an examination if you are concerned.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Frankie is super cute! That sounds like a scary situation to wake up to! I think he will be fine. Some dogs dream "actively"! My own dogs whole body convulses and he makes a lot of noise when he dreams. Frankie was either having a very active dream or did have a charlie horse type cramp. Just check where he was sleeping to be sure there wasn't something poking him or an insect that bit him. Watch him carefully over the next day or 2 to see if a limp develops in that leg. Dexter is so cute! It could be he is having bad dreams causing the screaming. It's good that he is otherwise acting normally, but if this behavior continues, have him checked out by a vet. I hope this helps!

I would continue to monitor him for any return of problems that you noticed and if they appear, I would have your vet evaluate him to make sure his legs are normal and that he seems physically within normal limits. Hard to say what happened. He may have been dreaming and was startled, possibly straining his legs. Sounds like he's good today so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Poor Marshall! Although it certainly could be fear/anxiety based, I have concerns that he has pain somewhere and he woke up screaming because the pain woke him up. Dogs don't really have nightmares to the best of my knowledge. I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian to look for any evidence of pain. If none is found, I recommend to talk to the vet about a temporary anti-anxiety medication as no one likes to see their fur babies like that. Not sure what happened here. A number of things can cause a pet to yelp, including inflammation of the colon (colitis), being bitten by a bug, stepping on something sharp, etc. You will have to do a good exam of your pets back end and paws to see if there is anything obvious there. If there aren't any obvious inflamed or red areas, then its best to monitor Lulu for the next 6 hrs to see if the incident happens again. Best case scenario is that this is just an isolated incident and there isn't anything serious to be concerned about. Puppies sleep all the time, so that isn't particularly worrisome either. It's possible that Blue may have simply had a bad dream. However, there is a recognized sleep disorder in dogs that can cause them to wake up out of a sound sleep and aggressively attack other dogs or people who happen to be nearby - it's uncommon, but it does happen. If you want to be on the safe side, it may be best to have Blue sleep in a crate or in another enclosed space, such as in an exercise pen or behind a baby gate to make sure that everyone is safe if this happens again. This problem does not usually translate to any increased aggressive behavior when the dog is awake, so that's not likely to be a concern.
