My puppy is very scared of people. How can I make her friendly?

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 months and 28 days old | 13 lbs

Sophie is almost 7 months. She is good with other dogs. Very scared of humans. I can't afford puppy training. She growls at humans and approaches them but runs when near them. How do I make her friendly to people?

Gradually introduce her to one person at a time. Do this in a neutral location such as a park. Begin with a short intro from a distance and gradually increase the time while closing the distance. Correct any negative behavior immediately and praise good behavior. End each session with a small reward.
As she acclimates to one person, add another then another. Take her to as many public places as possible as well. This will acclimate her further to people and crowds. The use of a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar, may help decrease any anxiety.
This will take time and patience. Do not rush or force her to meet people, especially if she is trying to run away. Give her a break when this happens and try again once she settles down.

This actually is not particularly unusual - while many dogs enjoy playing with other dogs, some dogs definitely prefer people. The dog park can be overwhelming even for social dogs so I would recommend avoiding it for now - if she continues to feel overwhelmed she could start to become fear aggressive. You may want to start by meeting one on one with a quiet dog friend to get her used to dogs. Make sure it is a good experience by offering treats, and if she starts to become too anxious stop and try again another day. She may never get to the point where she loves other dogs that are not familiar, but hopefully you can find a few dogs that she knows and will play with.

Puppy socialization classes and walking regularly in areas which are busy but where she will not feel pressured by direct contact such as parks can help.
