My puppy has scabs & losing hair on neck/back after daycare. What is it?

This looks like a scab. He could have gotten this after a little bug bite, a local skin infection, a minor injury from being in the yard, or something else. Since it is so small, I would not be too concerned right now. If it isn't healing, you see discharge, you find more spots, or this spot gets larger, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if he needs any oral meds or other treatment to help it heal. Scabs can be from a number of things including some minor skin irritation or injury that is healing. Puppy nails are very sharp, so it is possible a litter mate may have accidentally scratched your pup's head. As long as puppy is eating and acting normally, it is a good idea to just keep an eye on the spot and see if it heals. If the puppy appears sick, the area worsens, or it doesn't heal up, having a vet take a look at it is best as it could indicate a possible skin infection, or parasites that may be causing irritation.

Depending on the age of the pups there could be several things going on. Commonly puppies can get skin infections or an infection from a skin mite called demodex. The scabs could also be caused from the puppies playing and nipping at each other. I would recommend taking the pups in to be evaluated by a vet so an infection can be ruled out. If they do have an infection they will likely need some antibiotics to help clear it up since their immune system has not fully developed.

It does sound that is a flea you saw. It is not uncommon for puppies to have fleas and have scabs and bumps from scratching from the irritation of a flea bite. You can try a bath in baby shampoo or dawn dish soap as this help kills fleas on puppies to young for flea shampoos and flea prevention. You can gently brush the scab to loosen the debris and apply Neosporin to it when dry. You can talk to your vet about proper flea control base on his age and weight to prevent this in the future

The hair is coming off as the scab starts to fall off. So the hair isn’t the problem, it is what is causing the scabs to form in the first place. The most common cause would be pyoderma (infection caused by either bacteria or yeast/fungus). Those are superficial bacterial infections on Barley's neck. There are many different reasons why this can happen. Sometimes its just a random bacterial infection. It could also be related to fleas. If it continues to come back as a chronic issue, then I would suspect allergies or a thyroid condition. If she only has a few lesions, many times these will heal easily. I would recommend to put her on an oral flea prevention such as Simparica or Comfortis to be sure that fleas are not related. I would also recommend to wash her in a medicated shampoo twice weekly for 2 weeks. If she is very itchy, you can try an over the counter antihistamine. If Barley is very uncomfortable or if the lesions are getting worse, the veterinarian will have antibiotics and stronger medications to clear up her skin. It looks like Murphy has collarettes that are typical of pyoderma, a fairly common bacteria skin infection. I recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination. If it is confirmed to be bacterial, your vet will likely prescribe an antibiotic such as Simplicef along with a probiotic to prevent diarrhea from the antibiotic course, +/- a medicated shampoo such as Malaseb every other day for two weeks.
