My puppy has red, crusted bumps. Is it puppy acne or something else?

I would recommend using a shampoo such as Duoxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. If there is no improvement, then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Shadow so that further testing and treatment can be performed. I hope this helps! Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From what I can tell via your photo, this looks a lot like puppy pyoderma-a very common condition among young dogs. Essentially, these are "pimples" for puppies and usually caused by staph bacteria. I will usually try to rule out any underlying flea problem resulting in pustules, etc when I see these patients. If I see nothing else of concern I will usually prescribe antibiotics for 10-14 days at which point the breakout has usually cleared up. I would recommend seeing your vet to do these things as well-Lala will be much more comfortable without pustules. I hope this helps!

I suspect this could be secondary to demodex, which is a type of skin mite. There is likely also a bacterial skin infection that needs to be treated due to the potential primary mite infection. This is likely secondary to an allergic process and the red bumps you are seeing are known as papules. I would recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend using malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the redeemed area or anywhere you see bumps. Benadryl can be given in cases like this and most vets recommend a safe dose of 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

Poor guy. It sounds like Dante has a skin infection, which could be because he is so young and just susceptible to these until his immune system fully develops. Visit your local vet to get him some prescription antibiotics which should clear this right up. I hope that Dante's skin resolves soon! Best of luck moving forward. Take care.
