Puppy bit by rat, now has fever and whining. Is it an emergency?

In addition, if the rat was poisoned with rat poisoning, that will make the dog sick and kill them. I’m very concerned about him and I think he needs to see a vet immediately. Rat bites do have the potential to cause illness and fever. If you notice fresh blood from the mouth, even after rinsing the mouth with water, then chances are the rat bit Lilly somewhere inside the mouth that isn't readily visible. An ER visit is needed if the bleeding doesn't stop and is profuse, requiring cauterization. However, a regular vet visit on tomorrow is needed, even if the bleeding stops for tonight, because if the rat did bite Lilly then a prophylactic treatment with antibiotics should be considered to prevent an infection from festering.

The disease that rats carry is known as leptospirosis, and unless his 5-in-1 vaccine protected against leptospirosis, he won't be covered for it. Most 5-in-1 vaccines I am familiar with do not protect against lepto, so I would take Brazil into your vet to be safe. The vet can determine if he was bit by a rat, and prescribe treatment for it. I would also recommend getting a lepto vaccine for him if he's not protected for it.

If this is a rat bite there is a risk it will get infected, and it may turn into an abscess, or the infection may spread elsewhere, which can be dangerous to Bini’s health. Rats can carry a number of diseases that can be dangerous to humans as well, so I advise you to have Bini seen by a vet to address the potential bite. The area is likely very sore, and Bini will probably not let you clean it appropriately at home. Although rabies transmission from a rat bite is uncommon, it is not impossible, so your vet will need to address monitoring/vaccinating Bini accordingly. She may also need antibiotics, which can only be prescribed by a vet. Good luck!

Examine your dog for any sign of injury due to the fight with the rat (if any). If any (which is likely, sometimes even inside the mouth) take him to your veterinarian for an examination. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid licking/scratching at the wound. If your dog is not vaccinated for Leptospira, take him to your local vet anyway. Antibiotics may be needed. There is nothing to be done to prevent Toby from developing rat bite fever if he has been exposed. You will need to monitor him for lethargy, fever, loss of appetite or anything else out of the ordinary. An exam with your veterinarian would be recommended if Toby develops any symptoms. A course of antibiotics can be used to treat infection.

lottie needs to be seen by a veterinarian who will prescribe antibiotics for her. unfortunately rats can transmit nasty diseases to dogs and people, such as rat bite fever, salmonella etc. so please take her to a vet right away.
