Landlord wants rabies vaccine for puppy under 12 weeks. Is this legal?

No, Princess should not be dangerous to anyone if she bites or licks them - it's very normal for puppies to do this :) Rabies is extremely rare in pet dogs, and would be virtually unheard-of in a puppy this age - it can only be transmitted through the bite of an infected wild animal, so it's unlikely that she would have had any possibility of exposure at the age of two months. Dogs can get their rabies vaccine anytime after 12 weeks of age. So she isn't quite old enough yet, but your veterinarian can vaccinate her in another month or so. I do not recommend giving 5 in 1 vaccines on your own, because in my experience, vaccines purchased over the counter and given by owners are often not effective. It's much better to have your veterinarian give the vaccine, to make sure it's guaranteed to work.

No, I would not worry. Typically the first rabies vaccine isn't given until the puppy is 12 weeks of age. I would take Grey back into the vet when he is 12 weeks old to get his first rabies vaccine (he will need a booster of it four weeks after the first). I hope this helps :-)

If Smokey's mother was vaccinated he should be protected from his mother's immunity. Unfortunately the rabies vaccine isn't licensed for puppies younger than 16 weeks of age. You can discuss with your vet about the risks of vaccinating at a younger age, and ask if they can call/contact the company that makes the vaccines to discuss pros/cons in terms of risks about whether or not to give a booster at a younger age. The earliest age of vaccination is set by the government (in the US) and the vaccination companies, and they list 12 weeks as the earliest a kitten can be vaccinated for Rabies. Bordetella vaccine can be given to puppies from 8 weeks of age. The rabies vaccine will have to be repeated at 12 to 16 weeks (depending on your state's law) as maternal antibodies will destroy it and your puppy will not develop an immunity against rabies at this age. It is unlikely that your puppy will have any detrimental effect from those vaccines given at the age of 8 weeks. Whether the bordetella vaccine needs to be given again will depend on the type and brand of the vaccine. I suggest you follow the advice of your veterinarian. Accidents like this can happen, and it is likely that the tech who filled out your initial admission made a mistake when entering the information in the computer. This does not mean your vet is a bad vet.

Hello, it is generally recommended that puppies receive their rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that a rabies vaccine should be given no sooner than at 3 months of age. Regardless of the time given initially, your dog should have another vaccine at 1 year of age. Look for any evidence of hives, swollen face, or lethargy as these may indicate a vaccine reactions. You should begin all vaccines as soon as you can. You will need to check with her vet about her age. Pets can receive the rabies vaccine between 12-16 weeks of age but legally, some countries have laws about the age. You also want to have Julie checked/treated for parasites. I hope this helps.
