Landlord wants rabies vaccine for puppy under 12 weeks. Is this legal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 6 days old | 10 lbs

I am picking up my ESA on march 21st when she turns 8 weeks old. My state law is that no dogs under 12 weeks of age are allowed to receive the rabies vaccination, but my landlord wont allow me to have my dog in the apartment until she has her rabies vaccination. Are they allowed to do that when it's a state law that I cant legally get the rabies shot yet? or is there a way to make them accept my dog?

Hello. Perhaps you can obtain a note from your veterinarian that a puppy younger than 12 weeks of age has sufficient immunity from its mother ( called maternal antibody protection ) that vaccinating for rabies is unwise at this age. We must follow the guidelines set forth by the vaccine manufacturer & state law. Anything else could possibly affect obtaining full rabies immunity in this puppy because we also do not recommend early vaccinating & then giving a booster vaccination a month later as we do with a distemper parvo vaccine. Your landlord just needs to be educated, so hopefully just getting a note from your vet will help settle things. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
