Why is my 8-week puppy pooping blood and worms after deworming?

Hi there and thanks for posting! I wouldn't start to worry unless Harley starts experiencing an increase in bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. You can try feeding him a bland diet of chicken and rice with a few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling ) for a day or two and see if that helps firm up his stool a bit. If the diarrhea and vomiting continue happening, however, I would recommend having Harley seen by his veterinarian. A small amount of blood can be expected not as a result of the deworming per se but more as an effect of the worms that are likely there. If if it just a small amount of possibly blood in the stools, I would continue to monitor him for now. If no improvement is noted within a few days, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian could check if this is truly blood and see if Willow needs any other supportive therapy such as a medications for possible colitis. Good luck and have a great day!

Poor pup! No, this isn't normal at all - I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet today if at all possible. Vomiting blood with pale gums indicates a serious, life-threatening problem. I would be concerned that he may have parvo or some other serious problem such as an intestinal obstruction, as the dewormer would not cause these symptoms. The emergency vet can do a parvo test or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong and get him started on appropriate treatment right away.

Poor Luna! I can definitely understand being worried - it's always scary to see blood or other abnormalities in your dog's stool. The good news is, if she is eating and drinking normally, active, and not vomiting, it's extremely unlikely that she would have parvo or any other serious illness - puppies with parvo are usually very lethargic, not eating, and vomiting frequently. So it doesn't sound like this is likely to be an issue with Luna :) There are lots of things that could cause a milky substance like this with some traces of blood. Colitis, or irritation in the large intestine, can sometimes cause mucus with streaks or flecks of blood to be seen in the stool. This could also occur due to eating something she shouldn't have, or with a minor intestinal infection of some kind. She could also potentially have an infection in her anal glands, which are two scent glands located on either side of the rectum. If she is acting normal apart from this, it's not likely to be an emergency - but if the problem continues, it would be best to call your regular vet or take Luna in for a recheck exam to make sure that everything is okay.

It sounds as Diamond is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Depending on the stage of infection, it can take several days for all of the adult worms to die and be passed in the feces. It is normal to see different types of worms in the feces, as this product kills several types of worms, which are very common in puppies. If you notice that your puppy is continuing to have diarrhea after several days, I recommend bringing a stool sample from Blaze to your vet to determine which parasites are present. Black stool indicates digested blood from the upper GI tract (esophagus, stomach or upper small intestines). It could be that Daisy's dewormer killed a large burden of parasites in her stomach that contained blood, or that she has a significant GI ulcer. Daisy should see her vet to determine if there is a likelihood of active bleeding, a heavy burden of parasites in her stool, and then treat with any necessary antacids. Given her young age, this sign is more concerning and urgent in nature.
