Why does my 6-month-old puppy pee on the carpet after going outside?

It's very normal for a 16 week old puppy to still be having accidents in the house - most puppies are not reliably housetrained until 8-10 months of age, or older. It sounds like you're on the right track by taking your puppy out frequently, and praising and rewarding him when he goes - but if he's still having accidents in between potty breaks, I would recommend taking him even more often. I take my puppies out every 20-30 minutes while they are being housetrained, unless they are sleeping. There is no need to cage him after he has an accident, or use any other type of punishment, as this won't help - focus on getting him out more often to prevent accidents in the future, if this is happening. Don't wait for some type of signal that he needs to go - just take him every 20-30 minutes. Once he's gone a full 14 days with no accidents at all, you can start to give him a bit more freedom and space out his potty breaks a bit more. Just be patient and consistent, and give it time - he's still just a baby. He will get the hang of things as he gets older :)

I see that Murphy is still very young, only about 3-4 months old - this is much too young to expect him to be reliably housetrained. Most small-breed puppies like Shih Tzus are not reliable until at least 6-8 months of age or even older, so it's very normal and expected that he is still having accidents. You will need to be patient with him while he learns. Take Murphy outside frequently (every 20-30 minutes while he's awake and active) - go out with him so that you can watch, and reward with a treat as soon as he pees or poops. Inside, he needs to be supervised at all times to prevent accidents. If you aren't able to watch him, or when you're not home, he should be confined to a crate or a puppy-proofed room where accidents will be easy to clean up. If you see him start to have an accident, just hurry him outside to finish up there - then praise and reward as usual. It's actually not recommended to use any type of punishment for accidents in the house, as it usually doesn't help and just makes your puppy afraid of you. If he has an accident, clean it up without comment and focus on supervising him better next time.

Your puppy is young to be fully house broken, so be patient. If he is busy playing when outside they sometimes forget to poop until they come back in and relax. I recommend you bring him back in, out him in his crate for 5-10 minutes then take him out again to poop. Take him to the same area to pee and poop and reward him with a treat when he goes outside. Please leave him in his crate if you can't watch him so he doesn't learn to poop in the house. Most dogs are not fully housebroken until they are four months or older. Potty training issues like this can be very frustrating! The key is that you have to be very diligent, and more stubborn than your dog. Unfortunately, when it comes to potty training, going out 3 times a day isn't enough. If there is a way you can take her out more frequently, I would recommend it. Because if she doesn't go when you take her out, but she doesn't have access for another 6 or 8 hours, she is unlikely to hold it that long. You also need to make sure there is nowhere for Cardi to pee inside. This means she either needs to be picked up and carried inside (past where she normally pees), and stay on leash at your side at all times, or in a crate when unsupervised. The crate should be small enough that she can't get away from a pee spot, but big enough that she can stand and turn around. The other big thing is to get rid of the odor of urine inside. This means having the carpets cleaned, and in some cases rip up the carpet and pad underneath. As long as she smells the urine, she will recognize the area as an appropriate place to pee. Once a dog is trained to go inside, it can be a tough process to get them to go outside. The more you can give her opportunity to go outside the better. It might be a process best started over a weekend or a day you can be home. You have to give her frequent chances to do the right thing. Good luck!

It could be that you are not taking Odesia out often enough. At 4 months, she should be going out at least every 2-3 hours, if not more often, and if she is asking to go out, but having an accident at the door, you likely waited too long (since she can't control how well she holds it yet). Puppies also usually need to go potty after eating, drinking, waking up, playing, etc so taking her out after those activities can give her a chance to go and not have an accident as well.

3 months is still EXTREMELY young, and I would not consider a 3 month old puppy to be fully house-trained. Any new situation can always cause a regression in training until worked on, and some dogs may have accidents on occasion until they are old enough and their bladder is fully developed. I would give her a few minutes in between going outside, and letting her on the bed at night, to give her a chance to settle down and relax. It's very possible that the fun of being on the bed is just too exciting (or scary) and is causing her to have an accident as many puppies may experience excitement or submission urination, even if they've already gone potty outside. Once she is calm, you can put her on the bed, but try not to make a big deal out of it, to see if keeping her relaxed helps. If she does immediately pee, she may just need to stay off the bed for a while longer until she is a bit older. An enzymatic cleaner can also be used with any bedding when it is washed to help break down any urine particles that may be attracting her.
