My puppy has a strange bump or skin issue on its paw. What is it?

Poor Kong. This could be an infected area that Kong has been licking, a growth, or it could be where a small foreign object has gotten under his skin like a grass awn. First, you don’t want him to lick it so you can put a cone collar on him if needed to prevent this. You can try putting neosporin on it twice a day but chances are he may need oral antibiotics. You can also give him Benadryl. See link below. If it isn’t healing or gets worse, I would have your vet take a look at him. That looks like an infection. It could be bacterial, mites, allergies, a foreign body in the skin or yeast infection. At home you can wash it daily with an antibacterial soap (rinse it well). Make sure he is not licking or scratching it (use an elizabethan collar if needed). If it is not getting better or if it is getting worse within a week, then take him into the vet for an exam. Hello! That looks like some type of puncture wound on Lobo’s foot. Often this is due to stepping on/running into something sharp. Sometimes it can be related to a grass awning (called a foxtail) working its way into the skin. It can also represent a fungal infection or the emergence of a fly larvae. Lesions like this should generally be examined by the veterinarian since further treatment and antibiotics may be needed. I recommend to get Lobo into the veterinarian within the next few days. In the meantime, protect the area from licking bye have having him where an Elizabethan collar at all times. You can wash the area gently with soap and water and rental. It does not really look like a healed part of the stopper pad, so it could be a skin growth. If Tonny keeps licking the area you definitely should take him to your local vets for an appointment. For now, please use a head cone or bandage up the leg for 24hrs to stop him from nibbling on the leg as this could introduce skin inflammation and infection.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). I am sorry to hear about your concern for Lucky. It is possible this is a small pustule/bacterial infection maybe due to a wound (stepping on something sharp) but it could also be a small mass/growth (it is hard to say without seeing it in person). You can try applying warm compresses a few times a day to bring it to a head and putting a topical antibiotic ointment on the area 2-3 times a day. If the area is not resolving within a week or if it is getting larger/painful then an exam is recommended.
