My puppy has parvo and won't eat. How long can she go without food?

I'm so sorry Nala has parvo. It makes a puppy extremely ill, and I'm not surprised she hasn't eaten there. If the vet is giving her an IV, she may be getting nutrients from that. Check with the vet to see if that is what's happening. She is in the right place, and she has the best chance of survival there. I hope she makes it!

Fluids are key in this situation and maintaining electrolyte balance is paramount over eating solid food. The guys have been through a lot so will take some time to heal.

A puppy can absolutely stop drinking / eating if it has parvo or there may be another cause. There are many causes of inappetance so it is hard to say for sure what the cause would be with Ella. It sounds like your puppy is extremely sick, and parvovirus can take a few weeks for a dog to fully recover. It's very concerning he is not drinking as dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals. He should see a vet again immediately, please take him into one now. Best of luck.

Your veterinarian may have recommended to hold off food for a little bit to reduce the risk of her vomiting it back up. I would contact them to clarify the timeline that they recommended these things. Generally, withholding food for 8-12 hours is sufficient. Also, we do not generally recommend preventing dogs from drinking water. I would allow her access to water, and call your veterinarian to have them clarify why and for how long they don't want Luna to have food. I hope this is helpful!

Parvovirus treatment consists of aggressive supportive care to control the symptoms and boost your dog’s immune system to help him win the battle against this dangerous disease. Dogs infected with parvovirus need intensive treatment in a veterinary hospital, where they receive antibiotics, drugs to control the vomiting, intravenous fluids, and other supportive therapies. Please take her into a vet immediately.

Just regular canned puppy food would be fine. She may not like what you are feeding. Just getting some calories in her is important. If she is drinking on her own or eating canned food well, then you can stop with the Pedialyte - some dogs really don't like the taste. If she won't eat the canned puppy food (which would be best) you can try bland human foods like: *plain white rice *scrambled eggs * boiled chicken breast * plain pasta No butter, oil or spices on the food.
