My puppy doesn't eat much but is active and healthy. Is this okay?

If she is maintaining a healthy weight and growing steadily then I would not be concerned. Feeding guidelines are only an indication and are an average no t a requirement. If you vet determines she is healthy then I would continue to monitor her body condition score and growth

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would continue to feed her the small breed puppy food at the recommended amount on the bag. Puppy food is calorie-dense, so as to meet the energy needs of high-energy puppies. You can try breaking the amount into smaller, more frequent meals (ie three or four times a day) so she feels like she is getting to eat more. I would not over-feed her for fear of early onset obesity, which can lead to significant health issues later in life. You can also supplement her diet with healthy treats during the day such as carrots or green beans. After she is spayed, her energy requirements will decrease and she will need to be fed less food so she doesn't become overweight. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Pingo is very adorable! At 6 weeks of age, Pingo is still very young. It is normal to play for short periods and sleep a lot. Just like a human baby. Also Pingo is a small breed dog and her stomach is small. I would be sure to feed her small amount every 6-8 hours until she is 12 weeks old. The volume will be small due to her size. If you are still worried about how much she is eating then repost with the total daily volume she is eating in cups. You should be glad Soska doesn't always finish her food. If she hasn't done much exercise she may not be as hungry. Dogs are better at regulating their intake to equal their calorie burning than humans. Most dogs who are allowed to free feed are normal weight because they don't over eat. At this age it is expected for your puppy to eat less. Usually between 6-8 months of age puppies have less calorie requirement and will go from needing three meals daily to two meals daily. As long as she continues to eat dualy, act normal and is playful there likely isn’t anything to worry about. Best wishes and take care.

No he’s not too thin. He’s athletically lean. As long as he has as much food as he wants you do not need to worry. Many dogs regulate the amount they eat depending on their energy expenditure. That way they maintain their optimal weight. You are correct to feed when there are no distractions and he has time to pick at the food if he doesn’t want it all at once. If Jasper is otherwise acting normal and isn't lethargic or having vomit or diarrhea he may not need as much food or he may not like his food. I tell clients that they can stop feeding 3 times a day at 4 months of age. I would try feeding twice a day and feed 25% less volume that you were 3 times a day. You can try adding water to the dry food to make it more appealing. Or try a new brand of puppy food and gradually switch over. If he is acting sick then repost with symptoms or see a Vet.
