My puppy's nipples are swollen after heat, is she pregnant or ill?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 12 days old | 53 lbs

My puppy was in heat about 2 months ago. She spotted some and her vagina was swollen but about a month ago it went back to normal. About 2-3 weeks ago I noticed her nipples sticking more out and today it’s pufft around her nipples. She is my only dog. I have kept her either inside or my back yard that’s fenced in so I’m sure she has had no contact with other dogs. My neighbors have dogs but they’re fixed. So I’m confused why she’s getting boobs now.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is possible that Harley could be going through something called 'pseudo-pregnancy'. Dogs can develop mammary glands, produce milk, and will sometimes even start to nest and collect small stuffed animals to nurse. This is normal and will subside in a few weeks. However, it is recommended to get her spayed before her next heat so she doesn't have to go through that stress again. The other possible cause is something called a pyometra. This is an infected uterus and is life-threatening. If you notice any discharge from her vulva, if she is weak, not eating, drinking more, or acting abnormally at all, I would have her seen by your vet right away. Best of luck with Harley.

Yes, it is very possible that she may be pregnant. However, occasionally dogs will experience a “false pregnancy “. Dogs will even lactate during this false pregnancy. If you do not want her to have puppies then I would recommend scheduling her for a spay as soon as possible. Otherwise a pregnancy is about 65 days. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian to discuss pregnancy and perinatal care if she is pregnant. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

I would try and get Stella to the vet sooner if you can. They can be off form post heat but she could also be developing a phantom pregnancy. More seriously she could develop a pyometra infection of the womb, However, she sounds very bright and healthy for this to be the case.

Harley could be pregnant or she could be experiencing a false pregnancy (showing all the signs of being pregnant without having puppies). But these symptoms could also be due to her first heat. The only way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow. I hope this helps!

Hello. If you are sure that she is not pregnant, then this is just a hormonal response. The breast gland tissue may regress a bit, but as long as she remains unsprayed, she may develop a little more with each heat cycle. Spaying her now may help regress the tissues totally, but with each additional heat cycle, she may develop just a little bit more. So yes, this is a normal condition in an unsprayed female dog. Why are my dog's nipples enlarged and producing milk after heat?

Hormones can affect the body, and it is possible this is a result of the hormones from being in heat. Another cause can be pseudopregnancy, where the body thinks it is pregnant even if it is not. Dogs may gain weight, produce milk or show other behaviors similar to pregnancy. It is best to bring Chanel into the vet for a complete exam to rule this and any other health conditions out.

My puppy's vulva and nipples are swollen after heat, plus hair loss?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It can take a bit for the vulva and mammary glands to decrease from the hormones. She could also be experiencing a false pregnancy, which is a hormonal imbalance that can cause pregnancy symptoms: swollen mammary glands, milk development, nesting behavior, anxiety, carrying stuffed animals around. It usually resolves in 2-3 months. Causes for the area of hair loss are: trauma/injury/abrasion, skin infection, ring worm, demodex. I would put her on one of the oral flea and tick medications: Nexgard, Bravecto, or Simparica. All 3 also kill demodex as well. If the spot grows or doesn't resolve then I would have her seen. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Princess. I would advise taking Princess to your veterinarian. It's possible that she is going through a false pregnancy (pseudopregnancy) if you are sure that she didn't get bred by a male dog. Dogs often get mammary enlargement and will lactate when they are in a false pregnancy. Your veterinarian can gather a history and assess Princess. They may want to x-ray or ultrasound her to confirm that she is pregnant or not if she was out of your sight within the past 2 months or so. A false pregnancy usually resolves without treatment but it's also possible that she is developing some mild mastitis from the mammary enlargement. Your vet can advise you on any treatment that might be needed. Good luck with Princess

Yes if she didn’t get bred she could be having a false pregnancy. If you don’t plan to breed her I do recommend having her spayed. Dogs that have irregular heat cycles and false pregnancies can get uterine infections that can be very serious and need emergency treatment and spaying. Also the constant hormonal ups and downs make dogs moody and may be a factor in developing breast cancer sometimes later in life. A false pregnancy can last the nine weeks of a normal pregnancy then she should get over it a week or two after that. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mira. If you are sure that she is not pregnant, then she is likely experiencing a phenomenon known as a false pregnancy. Most of the time, symptoms will resolve with in 2-3 weeks. However, this is likely to recur with subsequent heat cycles. If she is not going to be used for breeding, spaying her will prevent this in the future. If she is acting ill or her symptoms do not resolve, then she will need to see her veterinarian.
