How can I treat my puppy's mange at home if I can't afford a vet?

Hi we have two puppy's we found, that have mange. One female has it more than the male we have been trying to use olive oil to sooth her. We can not afford medical assistance please help

Olive oil will not treat mange or soothe her. It is just going to make a mess. It is best for you get veterinary assistance. The chance of this resolving on it's own is very small.

I suggest you try a benzoyl peroxide shampoo like this one to help flush the mange mites out of the hair follicles:

Lather, let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse. DO NOT get this in their eyes. Wash them every 2-3 days until it seems to be resolving.

Once they are at least 8 weeks of age you can use the flea prevention Bravecto every 3-4 weeks. This actually will also treat mange.

If these two things don't start working in a couple months or they get worse then you need to get them to a vet.

It is hard to treat with that extent without seeing a vet. He would need a skin scraping to diagnose it. The best thing at home is a weekly bath in a shampoo that has benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient as this flushes the hair follicle. A vet can prescribe a monthly or once every 3 month medication to help get the mange under control if that is what they see

Use an oatmeal type bath. This will help to moisturize the skin. You may also ask your veterinarian about using a special prescription shampoo which can help to clear out the pores and may be somewhat effective against the mites (though you need to continue your current treatment). My puppy has patchy skin & suspected demodex. Home remedies aren't working.

It probably is demodectic mange. I suggest you talk to your vet about putting him on Nexgard or Bravecto. Both are oral flea tablets that coincidentally also treat demodex. Easy to do and relatively inexpensive. They are prescription drugs though so you need to get them from your vet. So much easier than all the things you are doing and it works better. Hope this helps. Mange is caused by burrowing mites which are not affected by coconut oil. The mange shampoo may help but there is a much easier way of getting rid of mange mites. Your vet can give your dog an ivermectin injection, you could get "Revolution" flea preventive (this is also licensed for mite treatment and very effective) or you can give your dog the Bravecto flea treatment, which also, and very effectively, kills mange mites.
