My new puppy lost his voice after barking a lot. Should I see a vet?

Sorry to hear that Bruno's lost his bark. A change in barking sound or a loss of bark can be associated with a few different conditions. While a collapsing trachea or an upper respiratory infection are certain possibilities, they are not the most common cause for this symptom. There is a condition known as laryngeal paralysis that is known to cause this symptom quite frequently. Regardless of what the cause is, it is unlikely to resolve on its own without some treatment. You should take Bruno into the vet for a physical exam and some diagnostic imaging. They will be able to tell you whether or not one of the above mentioned conditions is causing Bruno's current issues. Hope this helps!

This could be normal or it could be sign of an infection. If he is coughing, sneezing, lethargic or decreased appetite then I would consider taking him to the vet. Any of these signs could be additional clues that he could have an upper respiratory infection. If Max is a big barker and has recently been barking a lot then he potentially could have just lost his voice that we do sometimes. Over a few days, it should return to normal if that's the case. You can try 25mg (one adult tablet) of Benadryl twice a day in case it is allergy related. I have seen some dogs just have a small change in the voice as they get older but it usually a gradual change. If his voice isn't improving, worsens or he starts to have any of the above symptoms then I would have your vet take a look at him. your vet will be able to do an exam and listen to his heart/lungs to ensure everything is clear. Your vet will also be able to do blood work and X-rays if needed and provide the proper meds. I hope this helps!

Yes, persistent barking can cause a dog to lose their voice temporarily, it should resolve over the next 2-3weeks. If she is coughing or had any difficulty swallowing you should have her checked by your vet

The heavy breathing is worrisome though and can indicate a more serious problem. The veterinarian will examine him and listen closely to his lungs. Dog can have a couple different barking sounds, and it could be that he changes his bark based on the occasion. Sometimes, excessive barking can cause irritation to the vocal cords and the barks after this can sound weird or hoarse. This should heal with time if you can prevent additional barking. Unless the issue is coming from a bacterial infection, it is unlikely that antibiotics will help. Anti-inflammatory medications may have a better effect, but the issue will continue if your dog continues to bark excessively. I’m wondering if Orcan barked a lot when he was at the kennel and now has a ‘hoarse voice’. This is certainly something that can happen after lots of barking. He should improve in a few days. If not you should check in with your vet.
