Why is my puppy suddenly sleeping a lot and having diarrhea?

Oh no! The diarrhea may be secondary to stress, new food, parasites, viruses or foreign objects. The good news is that Rex feels well. Maybe sure he has plenty of water and take him on more frequent potty breaks. If the diarrhea persists for 24 hours or if develops vomiting and/ lack of appetite, take him to a see a veterinarian.

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

It sounds like it's time to take Blaze to the vet. Whenever we have severe diarrhea associated with vomiting or lethargy (sleeping more), it's worrisome. Hi there! Sorry to hear that Xin is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Xin evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. Hello. Puppies do sleep a lot. As long as Sky has periods of activity & is eating well, at least 3 times a day, & has regular eliminations, no diarrhea, then he is not probably overtly ill. But if he is suddenly acting sleepy when he was a more active pup, then this is not normal & he probably needs to be evaluated by your veterinarian. Having severe diarrhea like Beckett seems to be having can be very painful and uncomfortable. This may be why he is more lethargic than normal and why his stomach seems tense/contracted. It is great news that he doesn't have Parvo! Hopefully in addition to the antibiotics your vet also dewormed Beckett, as puppies often have intestinal parasites. If Beckett stops eating, begins vomiting, or the diarrhea isn't improving after about 48 hours of being on the medication I would recommend bringing him back to the vet to be reevaluated. Sometimes with severe diarrhea these little puppies can become dehydrated and need additional treatment like fluid therapy. Good luck!

I suspect that Lucky may have intestinal worms. Those cause diarrhea in puppies and a bloated stomach. I'd have him seen by a vet for this, and bring along a sample of his poop for the vet to check for worms. If the vet finds worms, they can treat him for it. And yes, it can be ok for him to pant hard when he sleeping, especially if he's hot. I hope this helps!
