Why is my 4-month puppy lethargic, has diarrhea, and warm belly?

Puppies do sleep a lot, so if Callan is just sleeping in between running around and playing normally this might be normal puppy behaviour. If Callan is very low energy all the time, and you feel the tummy is bloated, then I recommend a visit to the vet. You cannot tell their internal temperature without a rectal thermometer and 'feeling' them gives very inaccurate results of temperature. Possible causes of a puppy not feeling well include intestinal worms, a tummy ache from a change in food, a virus, and other more serious causes include severe viruses such as parvovirus, intestinal obstructions, congenital malformations, etc. Best of luck with Callan, I hope he is up and running around and playing again soon!

I am worried about a respiratory infection / possible pneumonia. This needs to be addressed sooner rather than later so that antibiotic therapy can begin right away. Vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy are quite concerning in any dog, especially puppies because of the diseases they can get such as parvovirus. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They would be able to check for this disease as well as checking for other possibilities such as intestinal worms or other infections. The sooner these diseases are diagnosed the better the outcome tends to be. At the very least, Gus can be started on anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications and his hydration status can be checked. It sounds like he needs immediate care if he is not eating, he is lethargic and may have a fever. This sounds like a serious condition that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Your veterinarian will perform a full physical exam and determine what additional testing may need to be done (xrays, bloodwork) to give you a better idea of what treatments are needed. Good luck.

It can be challenging with these little guys, especially when they are so young because they are more susceptible to disease. The eye discharge, while it looks quite gross, is not of urgent or immediate concern, but does warrant a trip to the veterinarian in the next 24-48 hours if possible. Something relatively easy you can perform is a temperature. If you have a regular digital thermometer (or can purchase one @ a local pharmacy/convenience store) you can take Rio's temperature. You can place the thermometer rectally (ideal) while using vasoline, lubricant, or mild dishwashing or hand soap - be sure the silver part of the tip of the thermometer is completely inserted (insert ~1/2 inch) into the anus. Alternatively, you can take the temperature by laying the thermometer deep under the axillary area (arpit of the front leg) on the skin and laying the leg back down over the thermometer while it is reading the temperature. If it is >102.5, it is indicates he has a fever, which is more concerning in a puppy and requires more urgent attention (either urgent care or a visit to your veterinarian in the morning). If the stools continue to become more loose, please collect a sample and bring the sample to the veterinarian when you schedule an appointment. I hope this helps...

From your description, it sounds as though Muffin has a bacterial skin infection and the bumps you are seeing are pustules. If he is lethargic and having diarrhea in addition to the pustules on the skin, I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to say whether Tucker's lethargy is due to illness or from the vaccine. When puppies his age are lethargic, have vomiting, and/or are having diarrhea, I always worry about the possibility they have parvo. Since Tucker has two of the three, I would highly recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and having a parvo test run as well as a fecal examination as soon as possible. The parasites could also be the culprit, but even if he doesn't have parvo, it is better to check and know for sure. Additionally, this will give the doctor a chance to give Tucker some supportive care, if needed, to help him through his illness. Hope this helps!
