Puppy's legs bending outwards and in pain. Is it calcium or worse?

It sounds like Scrappy Coco is suffering from an angular limb deformity called values, which is when the legs are bending outwards. This occurs when the growth plate in the one of the long bones of the forelimb (either the radius or ulna) closes and that bone stops growing while the other bones continues to grow. This isn't caused by a calcium deficiency, it's typically caused by trauma but it can be inherited (rarely though). The way to fix this is surgery, which I imagine it would be very difficult for you to find a veterinary surgeon in a remote area of India. This may be something you'd have to travel in order to get fixed, and I would recommend having it fixed as it's a painful condition. You can speak to the visiting vet to see if they can recommend a veterinary surgeon to see Scrappy Coco.

This sounds like a growth deformity, xrays would help to define exactly what is going on. Mineral, especially calcium and phosphorus imbalances can have a major influence at this age - converting his diet completely to a large breed puppy food may help to encourage optimal bone formation

There is a muscle known as the iliospoas that wraps around from the lower back to the pelvis. If this muscle is strained, it is extremely painful. This can be detected on a physical exam, but would not show up on an x-ray. Other problems can be related the spine itself such as disc disease. The most common cause of rear limb lameness is a torn cruciate ligament in the knee. Has she had stifle x-rays? More rare conditions are autoimmune joint disease or a tick borne infection. Both of these are typically accompanied by a fever. You may consider a referral to see an orthopedic specialist if you are having trouble reaching a diagnosis. I hope this information helps!

I would not give any supplements to Cholo. This could be way more vitamin D than he needs and could cause other problems. It sounds like he has arthritis pain. Glucosamine chindroitin is ok but he may need something stronger that he would get from a vet. Good luck and kisses to Cholo!

Poor Scobie! It is difficult to say exactly what can be wrong with her leg from the photo. Pain can be caused by fractures, nerve damage, or joint issues. I can see from the photo that Scobie’s belly is very big and she is pretty thin. She should be seen by a vet right away to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The best thing to do is to have an X-ray of the legs done at your Vet. I would highly recommend a boarded orthopedic surgeon. The cause can be from a nutritional deficiency, genetic malformation or premature closure of the growth plates. There could be options of a brace or surgery to correct the leg. I do not recommend doing anything at home with out the supervision of a Veterinarian as things could worsen. Be sure that Trigger is on a commercial puppy food for large breed dogs. I would be very concerned about neurologic disease. A possible fracture that is healing and pressing on the Spinal cord or traumatic disc compression. With neurologic disease it can vary clinical signs and severity. I would recommend strict cage rest at least 4 months. With him being active he could be injurying himself worse.
