Puppy has blotchy skin & bloated belly. Is Ivermectin safe at 6 weeks?

Hi Doctor! Greetings from the coast of Tanzania. We have a puppy with blotchy skin and slightly bloated belly. Siblings are starting to show signs of the spots as well. Local vet with predominantly cattle experience is recommending the following for the entire litter of 8: Oligovit 0.5m in 10kg = 0.05m for each puppy Intermectin: 1ml in 50kg 0.02 for each puppy (Ivermectin) Is this safe on the puppies? They are Rhodesian RIdgebacks and they are turning 6 weeks this Wednesday. DOB 1.5.17 Kind

It sounds like your veterinarian is treating your puppies for some form of parasitic disease. The Oligovet is a vitamin supplementation formula and should be OK to use in the puppies. Ivermectin is not recommended for use in puppies less than 6 weeks old. At six weeks it should be OK to administer although I cannot speak to the reasonableness of the dose without knowing the concentration your vet has provided you.

Dora's puppies are adorable! I can see the patchy hairless on the puppies' flanks (sides) and I'm assuming that your vet is suspicious of Demodectic mange given the prescribed medication. Other possible causes of these lesions include ringworm or Sarcoptic mange, which would require different treatments. Ivermectin can be used in puppies over 6 weeks of age, but it is considered "off label" use because Ivermectin has only been labeled for use in heartworm prevention in dogs. As for the dose, Ivermectin (as with nearly all medications) is dosed for an individual body weight. Each puppy should be weighed at least once a week so that an accurate Ivermectin dose can be calculated for each individual. If dosed incorrectly, the medication is either ineffective or can lead to signs of neurologic toxicity.

I'm not familiar with Oligovet and tried to look up this medication. It appears to be a vitamin supplement, but I cannot tell if it is approved for use in young puppies. If your puppies are all eating a balanced commercially available diet, vitamin supplements are generally unnecessary. However, always speak with your vet before starting or stopping any medication or supplement.

No Ivermectin is not safe, if your vet chooses to use ivermectin he must do an MDR-1 blood test prior to that, this test will reveal if your dog has the gene that causes sensitivity to ivermectin (and other drugs). if you dog is MDR-1 positive there are alternatives, personally i use Bravecto to treat Demodex in all dogs, it's very effective and works better than ivermectin in my experience, it is also safer than ivermectin.

My dog has mange. How do I use ivermectin safely for treatment?

Hello again. I am glad that you got her tested and got to the bottom of her skin problems. The veterinarian will have to give you specifics on how to give this medication because by law we are not allowed to give out the very complex dosage regimen for ivermectin without having first physically examined Pushinka. We are bound to the rules of the veterinary client patient relationship act, which prohibits this or we fear disciplinary action and even a loss of our license. If you ask your vet they will likely give you the dosages that she needs based on her weight. She will need to be on this for roughly 4-6 weeks. She needs to have 2 negative skin scrapes before being taken off the medication and skin scrapes should be done every 3 weeks. I would also continue the shampoo we discussed to also control the secondary bacterial infections that are occurring on her skin. I would then discuss with your vet about prescribing dosages for an antihistamine to hopefully help control the itch. Best of luck with Pushinka!

How safe are mange treatments for my 12-pound puppy's immature body?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Twerp! If Twerp has demodex, it will not be a "one size fits all" treatment. Classically demodex was treated with oral ivermectin which is dosed based on the animals weight. It is a higher dose of ivermectin than is in heartgard and is off label use of the drug. It works well and the dog tends to be on it for several months until 2-3 negative skin scrapings. Now a days we have found that the oral flea and tick medications have an added "perk" of also killing demodex. You just give the monthly oral dose like it is labeled to give for flea and ticks and by 3 months the fur usually has grown back and the mites are gone. Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto are the oral medication that can do this and again are based on the weight of the dog. I hope this helps and I wish Twerp the best!

No, do not do this. It is not safe if it's labeled for puppies over six weeks of age, and even cutting the dosage in half is not safe. I would get Panacur for them. It's safe to give puppies their age, and you may be able to get it at a pet store.

Puppy has worms and skin sores. Is it safe for him and my kids?

Young puppies have to be dewormed every two weeks until they are three months of age, then dewormed every month until they are six months of age. After that, they should be dewormed every three months. Your breeder probably did deworm Patch, but it can take at least two treatments for all the worms to be killed. The first kills the adults already present, while the second kills the ones that had not yet hatched at the time of the first deworming treatment. He will be ok until Thursday, but if he does start having diarrhea or vomiting (heavy burdens of worms can cause this), I would take him into the vet sooner. As for the sores on his skin, that could be due to fleas. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatments, you will need to treat him for fleas. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home.
