Could my new puppy get histoplasmosis from our old furniture?

Histoplasma is a fungus that can be found in the environment and specifically areas with bird and bat excrement. It is not generally spread directly from one animal to another, but certainly your other dog may have been exposed if they have been in the same areas. As far as human transmission, the biggest concern would be something like an accidental needle puncture with the organism, so your vet is much more at risk that your newborn. However, again there is concern if the soil in your area is contaminated. I think I would wait for the mass to be removed and to get the histopathology report on the mass to get confirmation of the disease, then start looking for possible locations of infection to try to prevent infection in anyone else. The incubation period is from 5 to 12 weeks. Some animals don't show clinical signs for a long time after being infected, but those animals are not contagious to other animals and people. Poor doggy. No mycoplasma is not contagious to other pets or people. Mycoplasma is transmitted through a flea bite and pets can be affected. This is not considered to be a zoonotic (contagious to people) disease although there was 1 reported case of a person getting infected after being scratched by a cat. But in general no it isn't easily transmissible to people. So essentially a flea that is infected will infect any other pets that are not protected by a monthly flea preventative.
