Why does my 2-month-old puppy have a hard golf-ball lump on his neck?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry that Cooper has a lump on his neck. Unfortunately, we cannot diagnose a lump based on what it looks like. Therefore, I would take Cooper to a veterinarian to perform a full physical exam and determine if is in fact a lump that needs to be tested or a wound/abscess or something else. Based on what it is, your veterinarian will determine the best treatment. Good luck!

This lump in your puppy’s skin is probably nothing to worry about. It could be from an insect bite or sting or may be a reaction to a vaccine he had in that area. Keep an eye on it for now. If it becomes larger, painful, or red, then take him to your vet right away. Or if he starts acting lethargic, vomits/has diarrhea or stops wanting to eat, you should take him to be checked out. If your dog has recently been vaccinated, this lump could be a vaccine granuloma and will go away on its own. However since the lump has grown quickly, you may want to have it healed out by your veterinarian. The vet can do a fine needle aspirate of the lump and look at the cells under a microscope and then may be able to determine what is causing the lump. I hope this helps. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Sadie. Lumps are always troubling unless they resolve over days to a few weeks. Possible causes for lumps include recent vaccinations, seroma (fluid filled space), hematoma (blood filled space), granuloma (growth consisting of inflammatory cells), cyst (fluid/sebaceous material filled sac), or a tumor which could either be benign or cancer. I would monitor the lump for signs of resolution as noted above. If the lump increases in size or the characteristics change, then I would advise that your vet see Sadie. They can perform a physical exam and then possibly a fine needle aspirate or biopsy of the lump if indicated. Hopefully this will resolve. I wish you and Sadie much luck.

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This lump could be a cyst, an abscess (a pocket of infection), a swelling from an injury, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. Unfortunately without seeing her in person, I cannot say for certain what is causing her lump. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed.
