My small puppy's gums look concerning. Are they normal for his age?

Its not normal for the gums to become pigmented from losing teeth but if you are seeing it on both sides, I would not be suspicious of anything abnormal. Monitor for any signs of abscesses from the puppy teeth-usually this will look like a red bump. I hope this helps with little Buster!

Healthy puppies have light pink, moist gums. If they are anemic from intestinal parasites the gums will be a paler pink or more whitish. You can press on the gums with your finger and a normal gum will turn white for a second then pink right up again. If the pressed area stays white longer they may be dehydrated also. Fleas can also cause anemia and pale gums. If there is any question about them being healthy please take them in for an exam. Pale pink gums are still normal for a dog. Since you say that Bentley is acting normal, eating and drinking, I would not worry. Check his gums once a day every day for the next few days. Should the gums turn pale or white, you will need to call your vet for an appointment.

The gums do look pale. Anemia in a puppy is usually caused by fleas or intestinal parasites. Please use a flea comb to remove any fleas. You can dip it in warm soapy dishwater to rinse it off and kill the fleas. I'm glad you are taking her in for an exam tomorrow. Please bring a fecal sample also so they can do a exam for parasites. If she's feeling good and playing she should be fine, I would not have her be too active, let her rest since they get tired and weak from anemia. This could definitely be due to teething. They often get irritated and bleeding gums at this time and it's really not a problem. Young dogs almost never have dental disease, so I would not be worried at this time. This problem should resolve in the next two months. It's great that you are brushing!! This looks like a normal color for gums. They should be pink. The thinned hair may just be him aging but if it is itching or if there are any scabs or getting worse, I would have your vet take a look to ensure it doesn’t need any treatment. I hope this helps!

Based on the pictures you have provided, I would say that Nova's gums look more pale than I am comfortable with. This could be due to dehydration, hemorrhage, destruction of the red blood cells from an immune mediated process, an infection, cancer, etc. I would recommend having Nova evaluated by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having her blood tested to start to see if she is anemic and to see what other values may be abnormal.
