My 4-month-old poodle is hungry. How much puppy food to feed?

It depends entirely on the brand of food, the amount recommended are written on the food label that you are feeding her, it is the daily amount requirement so you would need to divide this amount by 4 if you are feeding her 4 times a day.

Puppies should be fed 3-4 times a day. As for the amount, feed according to the instructions on the bag of dog food. Space the daily amount out during the day. So for example, if the bag says to feed 3/4 cup of puppy food twice a day, feed him 1/2 a cup three times a day. Smaller meals are easier to digest for the puppy and energy levels don't peak and fall so much with frequent meals. I would recommend feeding your puppy a high quality puppy formulated food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. Make sure the food is formulated for puppies, as they have higher requires of calories, protein and calcium for growth, and adult dog food will not provide that.

It good to be concerned about Mimi's diet. I like to feed based or her condition (thin or fat) and how hungry she is, not based on calories. A small poodle needs to eat four to six small meals a day to prevent hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, which is common in very small active puppies. It can result in seizures. I feed a good quality puppy food either dry or canned and feed enough at each meal that Mimi is hungry and just finishes it. If she is ravenous you are not feeding enough. As she gets older and bigger she will not be as hungry and you can reduce her to two meals a day. A treat when she pees and poops outside is good and give one when you put her into her crate. Ideally he would eat four times a day. At the least, he should be fed three times a day. It's best to feed a quality puppy food that is specifically formulated for puppies and it should be fed according to the manufacturers recommendations - they will have the daily recommended amount per body weight. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would continue to feed her the small breed puppy food at the recommended amount on the bag. Puppy food is calorie-dense, so as to meet the energy needs of high-energy puppies. You can try breaking the amount into smaller, more frequent meals (ie three or four times a day) so she feels like she is getting to eat more. I would not over-feed her for fear of early onset obesity, which can lead to significant health issues later in life. You can also supplement her diet with healthy treats during the day such as carrots or green beans. After she is spayed, her energy requirements will decrease and she will need to be fed less food so she doesn't become overweight. I hope this is helpful!

Congrats on your new dog, Paps is very handsome! He should be fed twice a day, and I would feed him according to the instructions on the food package. Divide the recommended daily allotment into two equal servings, and feed him morning and evening. Now if that's what you are doing and he seems very hungry, then divide the daily allotment into three portions and feed him morning, noon, and evening. Be sure to feed him a high quality dog food brand, as those will have the best ingredients to help keep him full and satisfied. Charlie needs around 300-400 calories per day for his weight and age (considering he is a puppy) so I would adjust the cups per day keeping this in mind. As he continues to get older and his weight increases, I would recommend continuing to follow the instructions on the food package label.
