My puppy fell, has a slight limp. Is it safe to wait for the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 month and 30 days old | 10 lbs

My 8 week old Austrian Cattle dog took a little tumble last night and it looked like he landed on his left hip. He wasent walking on it for about 20 minutes. He didn’t whimper and cry. About 1 an hour later he was walking around and playing. It looks like he might have a slight limp and favors his right back leg when walking up the stairs. Should I take him to the vet? I do have an appt on the 3rd. Will he be okay to wait until then? Also when I touch his leg it doesn’t seem to bother him.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would recommend having Jax looked at sooner than the 3rd. That is quite a while to wait. There may be a bone fracture and at this age, I worry about fractures to the growth plates. I would have x-rays taken of his leg to help rule out a bone fracture. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
