My dog has a cut and is limping. Does he need immediate vet care?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 30 lbs

My dog has a small cut on his shoulder/ upper front leg he just got today. He recently started occasionally limping. Should I be worried? Does he need immediate attention?

Did the limping start today? I wonder if Pawl injured a muscle when he got hurt. It sounds like if the limping is intermittent that it might be ok to wait a short while, but I always worry about fractures and if delaying the exam would cause delayed healing as well. However, many soft tissue injuries will heal in their own with a few weeks of strict rear and possibly anti inflammatory medications if he needs them. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian, but as long as the limping is improving then you may be able to wait until next week. Hello!

That looks like a pretty minor cut, so I think you're safe to keep an eye on it for now. Clean it 1-2 times per day with a warm water washcloth or saline- no need for soaps, ointments, or bandages. I would try to limit his activity over the next few days so that he doesn't open it up any more than it already is.

Another thing- don't let him lick it! Many dogs go overboard when they have a tiny cut and make it worse. There are different cone options available at pet stores if you need to get one for him.

If it begins to swell, ooze, or become painful then it's time to go to the vet to get any infection under control.

Poor Layla! If she is still limping I would make an appointment to have her seen by your vet. She may have injured her nail(s) as you described, or she may even have some soft tissue swelling/ irritation or a fracture. If there is a stick/ splinter/ other foreign object in her paw the vet can help remove it and treat it to help prevent infection. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Layla without consulting with your vet. I recommend keeping her in a crate or in a room where she can't run/ jump on anything and only taking her out for very short bathroom breaks until she is no longer limping. Make sure she's on a leash so she can't run and make things worse.

My dog fell, limping on front leg, no pain. When should I see a vet?

Poor Lily! There are many different possibilities in this case. It may be that she has simply bruised herself or damaged a muscle or ligament. However she may have a more serious injury such as a fracture or ligament rupture. If she seems to be comfortable and nothing looks out of place you could let her rest 24 hours then if she is no better or getting worse head to the vet.

If it just started you can let her rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, she might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

My dog is limping but not showing pain. When should I call the vet?

Limping can mean a lot of different things, including a muscle sprain or a ligament injury. It also depends on which leg is affected and exactly where the injury is on the limb. It is best to get your pet evaluated by a vet who can do a lameness exam to localize where the problem is on the leg. They will be able to recommend the appropriate treatment, whether it is just anti-inflammatory medication or potential surgery if the injury is involving the ligament. Many dogs will appear to act completely normal with a knee ligament injury.

My dog is limping after a walk. What should I do before vacation?

Well as long as she isn't painful then a vet visit can be scheduled when you get back if she is still having problems. It may not be enough time to get her seen before you go on vacation. And she may just have a muscle sprain, in which case it will improve and resolve on its own within a few days to a few weeks. There are no safe over the counter pain mess to give pets so I would not recommend that. However you can do a warm compress on the painful areas twice daily for 5-10 minutes and do light massage of her leg daily. Have whoever is watching her to monitor her closely and have her on strict limited activity and leash walk her only when she goes outside. I hope Lily has a full and speedy recovery. My dog limps inside but not outside. Does he need to see a vet now?

Poor Panki! Sometimes dogs will experience an adrenaline rush when they get excited, which can hide signs of pain temporarily. From the sounds of things, it is possible that Panki experienced a soft tissue injury his left front leg or his neck (which can sometimes show as a forelimb lameness). Since Panki seems painful, I recommend taking him to the vet tomorrow rather than waiting. The vet will be able to examine him and determine if additional diagnostic testing is necessary, and will be able to prescribe appropriate pain medications, if needed. Do not, however, give Panki over the counter pain medication, as none are safe for dogs. I hope that he feels better soon!

My dog limps after jumping, but shows no pain. Should I see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Limping is a sign of pain. It sounds as though it is likely a strain or a sprain. The best thing to do it limit his activity because continued use will not allow a strain or sprain to heal. So no running, jumping, no stairs or jumping on/off the furniture and leash walks only for at least 7 days. If the limp doesn't improve with in those 7 days Shadow should be seen by a Vet or sooner if it worsens. It is not wrong to have Shadow seen sooner than later as well. Do not give any human pain medications, dogs do not metabolize drugs like people do and they may interfere with medications your Vet may want to prescribe. I hope this helps and I wish Shadow a speedy recovery!
