The best way to keep your dog from eating is stools is to pick them up right away. There is a product called Forbid, which you sprinkle on his food, that can help with this. As soon as you stop using using it though, he will probably go back to eating them.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Every puppy is different so it is difficult to give you an exact timeline of when this behavior will end. For eating poop, I recommend spraying the poop with bitter apple to deter ingestion of the poop. You can also use Forbid, but I am unsure if this is available in your country. You might find another product similar at a pet store or if you call and ask a vet office. To break the biting Behavior, I recommend sticking your thumb underneath the tongue inside the mouth and gripping the underside of the lower jaw with the remaining four fingers. Once you have done this apply light pressure between your thumb and your other four fingers and hold that grip for about 5 to 10 seconds until your puppy finds this annoying. I usually repeat this several times before the puppy decides it is not a fun game anymore. Most of the time, puppies will come back for more thinking it is a game and shortly after experiencing several episodes they stop and lick instead. The next best step here is to make his poop taste bad. You can do this by purchasing a product called Forbid, which can be bought at your local pet store or online and give him that as instructed on the box for up to 2 weeks. You can also try 1 tsp of meat tenderizer added to his food daily. Most pets will grow out of this habit, but it is best to pick up the poop immediately after he defecates, and only leash walk him outside so that he does not have free range to eat feces. There are 2 ways to try tackling a coprophagia habit. 1 is to get him on a medication called Forbid. The other is to try adding 1-2 tsp of meat tenderizer in his food daily. The idea for both is to try to get his poop to taste bad so that he won't want to continue eating it, since it seems some dogs just really like the taste. This is such a common question for a gross, but unfortunately common, issue. Unfortunately, there isn't a great way to get them to stop. Adding excessive MSG (food seasoning) can make some dogs stop because their stool no longer tastes good (such as "For-Bid"). However, we don't know if there are negative effects for our dogs eating a lot of MSG. Trying to walk him for his bowl movement so you can pick up the stool right away is another way to manage it - you may need to have a treat ready to give him right away after he defects so that you have a moment to get to the stool. Unfortunately it is a normal behavior for dogs to eat their feces. For a puppy this age, it is best to work on potty training so that he doesn’t have the opportunity to eat feces. Make sure to take him it after eating dinner and again before going to bed so that he has plenty of opportunities to eliminate outside. You may need to get up in the middle of the night for a couple weeks, as well.

Sadly, there isn't a great way to stop this gross behavior. There are products that are just really high amounts of MSG, that sometimes make the stool less appealing to dogs, but I don't love that idea for puppies (or really any dog). For the litter box, you need to block Gretchen's assess to it and for eating her own stool, try to take her for walks for her bowel movements whatever possible so you can pick it up right away. You can offer a high value treat right after a bowel movement when walking so she learns to look for that special treat instead of turning around to instantly eat the feces. To be honest, it's not a habit that is easy to break. As far as the diet question, there is actually increasing evidence that grain-free diets may be harmful, so I recommend staying away from them and feeding a regular high quality puppy diet. Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina are all good brands.
