My young puppy begs for our food. Can I give him table scraps?

Yes you need to increase the amount of food at each feeding until he’s not so hungry. Feed him four times a day if needed to fill him up. Puppies rarely get too fat so give him enough food so he’s not starving. The amount on the bag is just a guideline. Pups that are more active and growing fast will eat more. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies need more calories and vitamins/minerals than adult dogs do help them grow appropriately. Whatever brand of food you choose, it is important to keep them on a puppy formula diet specifically until they are about a year old. After that, it is okay to transition to an adult brand formula. It is ok if your puppy watches you while you eat as long as he doesn't whine or beg for food. To help decrease any begging behavior at the dinner table, you can feed Snoopy his own food at the same time you eat so he is distracted with his own food and never feed him food from the table as this may encourage bad begging behavior! Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would continue to feed her the small breed puppy food at the recommended amount on the bag. Puppy food is calorie-dense, so as to meet the energy needs of high-energy puppies. You can try breaking the amount into smaller, more frequent meals (ie three or four times a day) so she feels like she is getting to eat more. I would not over-feed her for fear of early onset obesity, which can lead to significant health issues later in life. You can also supplement her diet with healthy treats during the day such as carrots or green beans. After she is spayed, her energy requirements will decrease and she will need to be fed less food so she doesn't become overweight. I hope this is helpful!

It looks like this is a repeat question, but in case you didn't see the previous answer, I'll re-post it here: At Maverick's young age, it's best to do 3-4 smaller feedings a day rather than one or two big meals. Every dog will be a little bit different in terms of nutritional demands, based on their metabolism and activity level, and every food is a little different in its calorie content. So, start with what the bag recommends for his size, and adjust it as needed according to what his body shape is doing. You want to be able to easily feel his ribs without seeing them. I would anticipate with Maverick's age and size he should be getting somewhere around 1.5 cups daily total, divided into 3-4 small meals (so, about 3 meals of 1/2 cup each could be a good starting point - but make sure this sounds consistent with the feeding instructions on that bag, since as discussed every food is a little different). Maverick should be getting his puppy vaccines every 3-4 weeks now until hes 16 weeks old, so your vet can help you evaluate his feeding amount next time they see him. It is normal for many dogs (especially labs!) to be very enthusiastic about food and to scarf it down very quickly. Left to their own devices, many dogs will eat themselves to sickness, so you cannot take is enthusiasm for eating as a sign that he needs more. Rather, adjust his food based on how his body shape is responding to his current feeding regimen. Make sure you're feeding him a high quality puppy food (it should be labeled for puppies, not "all life stages" or adults). Hope this helps!

It is best not give him human food at all. If he begs while you are eating put him in a different room or outside so he can't beg. Remove the opportunity. Feed him at the same time you are eating but in a different room or outside as stated above. Once you are done eating you can let him in and if he hasn't eaten his food then pick it up and then give it to him again at his next meal. He will not starve himself to death. Eventually he will eat his food once he realizes you are not going to give in. He is training you instead of the other way around. Coco is very young to be already starting this behavior. You need to stop it now before it becomes a habit that going to be even more difficult to break. Dogs do not need to eat human food ever. They should only be eating dog food.

I would feed Charley according to the instructions on his food bag label, as each food has a different recommended daily amount. He needs to be fed a puppy formulated food, as he needs higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than an adult dog, and a puppy food will provide that. I would also feed him three times a day. Divide the daily amount recommended on his bag into three equal portions and feed him morning, noon, and evening. Make sure he's up to date on his deworming treatments, as having intestinal parasites will make him hungry all the time.

Congrats on your new dog, Paps is very handsome! He should be fed twice a day, and I would feed him according to the instructions on the food package. Divide the recommended daily allotment into two equal servings, and feed him morning and evening. Now if that's what you are doing and he seems very hungry, then divide the daily allotment into three portions and feed him morning, noon, and evening. Be sure to feed him a high quality dog food brand, as those will have the best ingredients to help keep him full and satisfied.
