Can my 10-month-old Lab puppy eat adult dog food safely?

Cooper should eat a large breed puppy food until he is at least 12 months old. Some veterinarians even recommend to feed them large breed puppy food until 15 months old but some of this does depend on the over all adult size. Yes you can as long as it is a food made for puppies. You should soften it a bit first by soaking it with some water or chicken broth for 10 minutes before feeding. Do this until he is comfortable chewing the hard pieces.

Labs have a tendency to grow too fast, and as they get older to get fat. Therefore I like to use Nutro large breed puppy dry, then switch to adult large breed, and weight management later in life if needed. I like Nutro because it’s a complete diet and lower in calorie than most of the other dog foods. Dogs like it and there are several different Nutro varieties for you to choose from. A ten month old dog should be eating a diet formulated for growth, aka a puppy diet, until they are at least 12 months old. The top dog food brands that we recommend are Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin. But, any dog food that is NOT grain free, or vegetarian or vegan, should be healthy for your dog. I would not recommend feeding this food exclusively to a 6 month old dog - it is formulated for adult dogs and not for growth. It is best to feed dogs puppy food until they reach 1 to 2 years of age depending on the breed. Foods formulated for growth have different protein and mineral levels that ensure bones and joints are growing properly. If you feed an adult food it can result in nutritional deficiencies and poor growth.

Hello, at this age, Roma should be on a good puppy food. You can use a canned or dry kibble ( or mix the 2 ), or you can moisten the dry with a little water. Just do not make it soupy as you will dilute the nutrients. At about 3 months of age, I would switch to a large breed puppy food that you can continue until Roma is 12-15 months old, then change over to an adult maintenance food. For the first year of life, puppies go through fairly extensive growth and development, particularly in terms of skeletal maturity. Diet plays a huge role in this development and nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of lifetime problems. I am not aware of any vegetarian diets that are formulated for puppy growth. As a result, I would strongly recommend feeding a traditional meat-based large breed puppy diet for at least the first year of life. After that time, you could consider switching to a vegetarian diet, such as Royal Canin Vegetarian or the Purina HA prescription diet. Enjoy your new puppy!
