My puppy's vaccines were early. Does he need more shots or a vet?

Hello. Your veterinarian is correct. The first vaccination was done at too young an age to promote immunity. No harm was done & this is a common practice with breeders who vaccinate so early. To promote the best immunity, vaccines are administered at 8, 12 & 16 weeks of age, then again in 1 year. Vaccines should be administered as recommended by your veterinarian after the one year boosters. So yes, Maple should receive one more booster vaccination. He will not be fully vaccinated until he's received two rounds of vaccines 3-4 weeks apart after 12 weeks of age. He will also need to have a rabies vaccine (which must be given by a veterinarian) between 12 and 16 weeks of age. Bring your shot records to that appointment to make sure there aren't other diseases Gizmo needs to be vaccinated for that aren't covered in your combos. Several rounds of deworming and fecal testing is also very important for puppies. Finally, by doing vaccines on your own, you're taking some risk of that vaccines not being fully effective if they weren't kept cold while being delivered or on your way home from the store. Boarding families, airlines, and customs may also not recognize Gizmo has up to date on vaccines.

Puppies typically get three vaccines starting at 6-8 weeks of age. Starting at 6 weeks is better than starting at eight. The boosters are 2-4 weeks apart depending on their risk. High risk puppies (in contact with a lot of dogs, or infected dogs) should get the vaccine every two weeks. The last vaccine should be around 16-18 weeks and is very important for them to get, because this is when they are most susceptible to getting one of the diseases we vaccinate for. If Beaux only had a vaccination at 6 weeks of age, he will likely need 2 more DAPP vaccinations 2-4 weeks apart. He will also need a Rabies vaccination and may need a Bordatella vaccination for a training class. I would recommend contacting your local training facility to find out what vaccinations they require (because some are now also requiring influenza vaccination depending on the location), then schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to determine the best vaccine schedule for Beaux to be fully protected from the vaccinations. If he only had a vaccination at 6 weeks of age, then he is NOT considered protected, so I would not recommend taking him to a training class without consulting with a veterinarian. Good luck! If you feel like your puppy is weaker than her should be at this age then I recommend taking him to the veterinarian to be examined. He may have intestinal parasites (very common in young puppies) or could have something more serious like parvovivrus. You should also make sure he is fully vaccinated. Your veterinarian can give you a schedule of when he needs what vaccines. He should also be vaccinated for rabies at 12-16 weeks of age. Your puppy should be eating a large breed puppy food. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 2 weeks is really too soon for the next vaccine. 3 weeks is early but is acceptable if you have to, 4 weeks is ideal.
