My 45-day-old puppy got a distemper vaccine too early. Is he safe?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 10 weeks of age, regardless of what vaccines Ted had previously, he is not old enough to consider him fully vaccinated. We vaccinate starting at 7-8 weeks and give the DHPP (or whatever version of that vaccine) every 3-4 weeks until they receive TWO past 12 weeks of age. I have seen dogs who got their last vaccine at 12 weeks still get parvo (at risk breeds like rottweilers and pit bulls). So while I am not in full agreement with the reason you were given I agree that he is not fully vaccinated yet. There is a fine line between protecting him from disease and socialization. He can be socialized with well vaccinated dogs and can go for walks on side walks. He shouldn't play with puppies or dogs where you do not know their vaccine status or play in dog parks. For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. Puppies are typically vaccinated for the distemper virus. However, some are never taken to a veterinarian. So I would certainly recommend having Charlie vaccinated now. He would need an initial vaccine and then a booster in 3-4 weeks. This will ensure that he is adequately protected. Unfortunately, it takes up to 2 weeks for a vaccination to be effective, so vaccinating the exposed puppies after exposure, will not help protect them from their previous exposure, but may help protect them against future exposure. You can call your local VetCo clinic to determine if they are able to accommodate the puppies in a safe manner, so that other dogs are not exposed. I am attaching a link to the American Animal Hospital Association's vaccine guidelines below. https://www.aaha.org/guidelines/canine_vaccination_guidelines/practice_vaccination.aspx Puppies should receive DAPP vaccination every 2-4 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks of age. If Beaux only had a vaccination at 6 weeks of age, he will likely need 2 more DAPP vaccinations 2-4 weeks apart. He will also need a Rabies vaccination and may need a Bordatella vaccination for a training class. I would recommend contacting your local training facility to find out what vaccinations they require (because some are now also requiring influenza vaccination depending on the location), then schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to determine the best vaccine schedule for Beaux to be fully protected from the vaccinations. If he only had a vaccination at 6 weeks of age, then he is NOT considered protected, so I would not recommend taking him to a training class without consulting with a veterinarian. Good luck! First of all, Dodger is adorable! As far as boostering his vaccines, it is recommended that the DAPP (distemper-adenovirus-parvovirus-parainfluenza) vaccine is given every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age. If Dodger receives his first DAPP vaccine at 8 weeks of age, he could receive 3 boosters (at 8, 12, and 16 weeks) or 4 boosters (at 8, 11, 14, and 17 weeks) depending upon how you schedule his booster appointments. There is no right or wrong way to handle his boosters as long as he receives them until at least 16 weeks of age since his mom's antibodies will wear off sometime before the 16 week mark.
