My puppy digs in his water bowl and tips it over. How do I stop him?

This is a fairly common behavior that pet owner witness with their dogs. It is not a concerning behavior and can be due to boredom, different water bowl, the placement of the water bowl, etc. There is no need to be concerned about the behavior and you can try using a different water bowl in a different location to see if this behavior lessens. That bowl is very small for the size of your dog, so it could be that she is trying to get to more water. Switching to a larger bowl, or one that is a different material may help her paw at it less. If it is kept close to her food, she may also be trying to "bury" it for later, like a bone or toy.

Often pets start digging behaviors when they are bored. Making sure pilot gets a lot of exercise and mental stimulation will help a lot. Puppy training classes are great! You can also try other mental tasks at home like treat puzzles (you can purchase from your local pet store). Blocking access to the dirt and carpeted area unless supervised will help prevent home damage in the meantime. I love Pilot's name!!

Find a tire into which the bowl fits, so she cannot turn it over, or get a really big bowl and put a large stone into it. Ultimately you can also have their drinking water in the shower where it does not matter if the bowl gets turned over.

There are several reasons cats like to "knock over water dishes" or play in their water bowls, including (1) it's fun - they enjoy splashing the water and making it move, seeing the reflective surface, (2) they prefer to drink from a moving water source (because moving water is more aerated and generally tastes better/fresher), (3) the bowl isn't to their liking - too big, too small, too deep, etc., so they splash water out and drink from the floor, (4) you give them fresh water whenever they knock the dish over so they have learned that this a successful method of getting your attention. Some things you can do include: (1) purchase a water fountain for cats (water moves continuosly); (2) get a heavy cermic bowl or a bowl with a wider base than top, (3) put a placement or plastic tray under the bowl, (4) offer more shiny, sparkly toys, like Mylar balls, to catch your cat's attention, (5) changed the water at least twice per day so your cat doesn't need to ask you for clean water.

Many times, digging can be a sign of boredom and understimulation. This can also be a behavioral problem. The things you can do to help prevent digging are as follows: 1. Increase exercise and get Duke to play more. Dog parks, increased walks, playing fetch, etc. can all be beneficial 2. Don't allow toys outside. Many dogs dig and bury toys outside so not allowing toys outside can prevent this. 3. Provide an area that you permit digging.
