My puppy has diarrhea. Is vanilla ice cream safe to give him?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 13 days old | 3.3 lbs

I have a 42 day old Labrador, pure breed and is away from his mother. The vet recommended vanilla ice cream for loose motions. Is vanilla ice cream good for a lab and is it okay to give it in large amount?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rocky. No, I do not recommend giving vanilla ice cream. It will likely make the loose stool worse. Dogs do not digest lactose well. Ice cream is also high in fat which can exacerbate diarrhea if given in large quantities. If possible, he should have fecal testing to see if you can determine the cause of the diarrhea. He will likely need a deworming medication and possibly an antibiotic. I hope this information helps!
