My puppy gets diarrhea on Pedigree food. Is it a food sensitivity?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 3 days old | 37 lbs

I fed luna pedigree puppy food since she was 8weeks old a month ago she started having bad diareah so we took her to the vet they took a fecal sampl nothing came back, we never figured out what caused the diheara and it continued we didnt worry cause she was fine otherwise and her happy self. i decided to try plain white rice diet cause i was sick of the diareah, not even 24hours of her eating it it stoped so i put her back on pedigree puppy and the dieahra came back is it the food causing it.

I am sorry to hear about Luna, that must be very frustrating! It is possible that something in the Pedigree is not agreeing with her tummy! If she is still energetic, eating normally, there is no vomiting and no blood or mucus in the stool you can try a different food (my favoriate puppy food is Purina Pro Plan, and I recommend dry food) and adding a small amount of fiber by putting a teaspoon of canned pumpkin on the food. A probiotic made for pets such as Forti-flora (available at your vet or online) or Proviable can also be helpful. If Luna is not on a monthly heartworm preventative, it is possible she could have intestinal parasites even if she had her stool checked before (she could have been infected from the environment) so it is worth getting her stool checked again.

My assumption is that something in the Pedigree is not agreeing with her or she is sensitive to it. I suggest you try a different brand of food and also start her on a probiotic. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive store brand food I suggest Purina One. I recommend dry food and not canned. For a probiotic, use one made for dogs - no human ones or diary products.

Unfortunately, even though Luna is on monthly its still possible for her to pick up a GI parasite. Different heart worm
Preventatives protect against various GI parasites and no heart worm preventative can protect against all parasites.

I'd recommend starting by taking a stool sample to your veterinarian to have it checked for parasites. You can also offer Luna a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if this helps to slow the diarrhea.

If her diarrhea persists she may have to have an exam with the veterinarian to ensure nothing else is causing the diarrhea. Please monitor her for other signs of illness like vomiting or inappetance and bring her to the vet sooner if these occur.

You are correct that Royal Canin is a better food for Darcy, and it's a good you are making the switch to it. It could be that the combination of the Pedigree and Royal Canin is causing the diarrhea, and she's not eating because of an upset stomach. I wouldn't be worried just yet, and I will give you a home remedy to try before having to take her into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet, just the Royal Canin dry only. The diarrhea could also be caused by intestinal parasites, and I would make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Giacomo. I'm sorry to hear you are having all of these problems with him. About 75% of the time ongoing diarrhea in puppies is related to intestinal parasites or diet. So have your veterinarian ensure he does not have any parasites including giardia. If he is negative and has been properly dewormed, I should start him on a prescription low fat diet that is highly digestible. I use Purina ProPlan Veterinary Diets EN as it is safe for use in growing puppies. If this diet does not resolve the diarrhea, he may require a diet for a food allergy such as a hydrolyzed formula. My puppy's stomach is upset from Pedigree Chum. What food is best?

Thank you for posting the food! I can certainly understand being concerned about this food, it is not a good quality food in my opinion. And from your previous post, it does sound like it was upsetting her stomach. I would consider switching her to a different food slowly. You can give her a high quality food like I mentioned previous, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet, but other good quality foods include Iams and Purina Pro Plan. To switch food, you mix the new food and old food together, gradually increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the amount of the old food until your puppy is eating the new food only. This help prevents GI upset.

What causes constant diarrhea in my 8-month-old Lab on sensitive food?

I'm sorry to hear that Hatty is having so much diarrhea. I would first make sure that she's had a fecal exam to look for parasites and that she is being dewormed regularly. You may also consider a blood panel to look for any underlying medical reasons that may be causing diarrhea, such as pancreatic disease. If the pancreas is not producing digestive enzymes like it should, then the food can't be properly broken down and nutrients can't be absorbed and this often results in diarrhea. Once medical causes are ruled out, then you can address the diet. Any time there is a diet change, you have to make sure to feed only that food for 6 to 8 weeks to see if she improves. During this time, she cannot have anything else by mouth, including treats, people food and even oral medications like Heartgard since it has real beef in it. Ideally, you would start with a prescription diet that it hydrolyzed or limited ingredient since there is no cross-contamination in these foods. Over the counter limited ingredient diets may still have trace amounts of other ingredients if they are processing other foods in the same facility. If it's a true food allergy, even trace amounts can cause problems. If you see improvement on a certain diet, then I recommend continuing with that diet and not changing anything as long as she's doing well.

Pedigree makes my dog vomit and weak. What food helps stomach upset?

Pedigree is a balanced dog food, however there may be an ingredient in it that is upsetting Bruno's stomach. Other issues such as parasites or an underlying illness may also cause vomiting and weakness. I would first visit your vet to rule out any more serious health issues that require treatment. If your vet suspects a food allergy, they can work with you on a trial to try and rule out what ingredient is causing it. Once you know the ingredient, such as a type of protein, grain, etc, you can then look for a food that doesn't contain it. Many brands such as Science Diet and Royal Canin also offer general sensitive stomach foods that may be easier on the stomach as well. If you do switch, be sure to do so over a period of 7-9 days to avoid more stomach upset.
