My dog has a dark spot on their tooth. Is it a cavity or serious?

Thank you for posting pictures. (I know that is always a challenge with a puppy!) From the pictures, the brown area just appears to be particulate build up on the tooth. That particular tooth has 3 roots, so there is a depression between the roots that things can get stuck in. (One of my dogs always has problems there.) I would recommend using an infant toothbrush and pet toothpaste (my favorite is PetSmile (http://store.petsmileusa.com)) to brush her teeth and continue daily. I hope that was helpful! I would recommend getting your vet to check this closely, it appears in the pictures that the lower canine is making contact with the gum and chronic irritation can cause inflammation, scarring and occasionally tumour changes

This looks like dental staining. She does have gingivitis and dental plaque so I recommend a dental cleaning. When the teeth are scaled and polished the stained area may disappear. Also when they are working on her teeth they can check this area more closely to see if any additional treatment would be recommended. That appears to be just some build up in a normal furrow in the 4th premolar tooth. This can occur with normal wear on the teeth. Black discoloration could indicate an infection or a foreign object trapped at the gum line. If you cannot easily remove it (be gentle), I recommend to have Jasmine examined by the veterinarian. Small dogs are more prone to dental disease and it is best to be proactive. Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach and for giving us that amazing photo! Much appreciated! I personally, think it looks like pigment and is normal. I suggest you just monitor it for now and it the black spot gets larger, then have your vet check it out.

This doesn't look like an infection to me, this is just normal deposit on top of the tooth, this can be removed with scale and polish procedure, but at the moment it is not nearly bad enough to have this procedure done, maybe in a few years.
