My 8-week-old puppy chokes from soft palate. How can I help?

Most vets recommend waiting to fix cleft palates until they are nearly full grown, around 6-8 months. Keep going on, but know that they are at an increased risk of getting aspiration pneumonia. If they start having issues, you may need to have a vet teach you how to do tube feeding instead.

Hi and thanks for your request. Prognosis for these cases is unfortunately poor. If elected, treatment of cleft palate depends largely on the size and location of the defect, and the degree to which the affected puppy is currently affected. hat even after successful surgical correction, long-term complications as a result of the cleft palate defect are possible, even likely (like upper rspiratory tract infections). At the same time other concurrent malformations can occur and may affect the Daxy your are taking care of.

It sounds like Sophie may have a collapsing trachea. This is a common condition in toy breed dogs, and it occurs when dogs are exercising, drinking water, get excited, or in hot weather among other causes. I would take Sophie to the vet for an exam to confirm if she does have a collapsing trachea, as there is medical treatment that can be done for her, such as cough suppressant, bronchiodilators, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medications. If medical treatment doesn't help, surgery is recommended. You can help relieve by making sure Sophie isn't overweight, having her wear a harness instead of collar, and avoid respiratory irritants like cigarette smoke.

Oli may be eating to fast. You can try purchasing a puzzle feeder dish (they are available on Amazon.com) with ridges in it that slow down eating and drinking if used as food and water bowls. If this doesn’t resolve the coughing/gagging, and he coughs/gags with canned puppy food as well, it is possible that he may have a condition called megaesophagus where the food doesn’t move down his esophagus normally. Your vet can take X-rays of his neck/chest to diagnose this if slowing down his eating/feeding him small amounts at a time or trying canned food as well does not help. Good luck! Your dog may have an elongated soft palate that causes an intermittent obstruction of air flow. Usually it is self limiting and doesn’t cause issues but if this is happening consistently there is a surgery that can be performed to help open up the airway. I would recommend talking to your vet about the issue and having them perform an oral exam. They may recommend surgery. I hope this helps. Yes, it looks like this puppy has a pretty severe cleft palate. I would recommend having the puppy evaluated by the vet. Some of these can be fixed surgically. The vet may show you how to tube feed this puppy to make sure the milk is getting to the stomach and is not being inhaled through this hole (so that the milk gets into the lungs and causes pneumonia). You should start weighing the puppy daily on a small kitchen scale to make sure it is gaining weight every day.

Hello, at 5 months of age the most common reason for coughing/choking is kennel cough. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam and medications. This can progress to a pneumonia quickly and in a small 2# dog this can be extremely serious. I am very worried about this as you stated he was weak and lost his appetite. I don't suggest that you continue to perform any "first aid" for choking on a dog this small as you can easily injury him. I assure you that it is very unlikely he has something stuck in his throat.
